Once I’ve got my toes a bit wetter(?) playing with the Gauntlet, I’m interested in running a war saga a la Robotech, Mobile Suit Gundam, Starship Troopers, Armor or any of those stories where mecha/power suits are the basic front line of combat as opposed to godlike special forces like in Lion Voltron, Gundam Wing (is that the right one?), Evangelion, Rahxephone, etc.

I was a big fan of Heavy Gear and Jovian Chronicles, but while they do have cool anime-esque art and fun tactical robot combat, they’re pretty trad and don’t enforce the game I want. Coming from trad I want those epic space battles, but the big thing that I loved in those stories was the almost soap opera drama.

So, what are the pros and cons of Uncharted Worlds vs. other stuff I’m unfamiliar with (Impulse Drive, Infinite Galaxies, Adventures on Dungeon Planet, others)? Are there hacks or reskins that would work such as Rich reskinning The Few and 1%er, or maybe a less oppressive take on Night Witches? Although I haven’t read it, people talk about The Veil so highly because of its interpersonal play. Would it lend itself to a hack that adds something like Mecha World, or is that too much trouble – rather, are other full systems perfectly adequate?

Not married to PbtA, btw. Just seems like the rules base that most pushes spiraling fiction.

Long post, too many parentheses. I’m done. Thx in advance for any suggestions/insights.

Hey Gauntlet

Hey Gauntlet

Hey Gauntlet,

I have run a group of friends through two Dungeon World adventure and they have said they are having a good time, but I seem to be lacking in the treasure area. How do you ‘reward’ the characters? Random magic items? Piles of gold? My players are all 5E and Pathfinder players as well as games like Shadowrun, so they are looking for something but would be ok with just a payment if the adventure was a job instead of a random event. Thanks for your input.

Here’s a PWYW product based on a couple of articles I wrote for GnomeStew last year.

Here’s a PWYW product based on a couple of articles I wrote for GnomeStew last year. It’s a method I use to create adventures, and was used to create the adventures seen in issues 4 and 5 of my Dungeon World zine The Destroyer of Ages (available now on DTRPG) and The Frost Giant’s Gambit (available at the end of this month).

It may not be for everyone, but it has really helped me simplify the process of designing adventures.

I vaguely remember a low magic variant of monster of the week… Can someone point me in the right direction?

Crowdsource: Herb Effects

I’m a player in a 5e Tomb of Annihilation game. My monk happens to be an herbalist; and she also loves tobacco in any of it’s forms (smoke, chew, dip, snuff, etc She might even ingest it – she loves food too). And now she’s in a JUNGLE!

So I’m going to play this up for fun.

My ask of you all – what are some cool, odd, funny, or other mildly toxic effects of the herbs? If you want to add mechanical impacts, they should be very minor.

Here’s a link to an Herb and Spice name generator.

Feel free to use the name generator and connect your effect with a name. Or not. Looking for jungle sounding names – like Bruise Nigella, or Qittugane, or Elephant Turmeric. Or Make Up Your Own!

Thanks 🙂

Jason Cordova Jason, in a recent Fear of a Black Dragon you mentioned that you liked to pull the themes out of OSR modules as opposed to th scene by scene details. I would be interested in hearing exactly how you do that. I tend to read a module from page 1 until the end (or I get distracted by the next shiny). What is your process for pulling out the themes of an OSR module?

Like do you get out a notebook and write down highlights? That sort of thing.

Interested in everyone’s thoughts…

Hey – is there a generic indy game that handles cross genre stuff?

Jesse Donavan Edmond was talking about running a Banestorm inspired campaign over in the Misdirected Mark community. But that’s a GURPS setting; and my days of running GURPS are probably behind me.

The idea of Banestorm is that there is a parallel world that is a standard fantasy world. The drow tried to cast a spell to send all orcs to another dimension. But that backfired (surprise); and now there’s this dimensional storm that picks up individuals from Earth and deposits them throughout this fantasy land. So it’s this cool amalgam of human medieval cultures and fantasy.

Like Jesse, I’d like to move the timeline forward a bit and have a group of modern folks pulled into this setting. Maybe they are all on a bus or something.

Any thoughts on a game like this that already exists that’s got a looser set of rules?

My thinking of what the characters would do:

They would be a ragtag band of folks randomly thrown together trying to either a) figure out how to get back b) figure out how to survive or c) figure out how to thrive – or all three.

It sort of sounds like Apocalypse World, except immediately after the apocalypse…

Maybe FATE? Does FATE do gritty well?

So one of my players realized that his family was coming into town this week instead of next week. He’s the GM for the game we’re playing currently and we’ve basically got one session left in our Mouse Guard campaign, so we can’t really finish up without him.

This means I’ll probably need to run/facilitate a one-shot on Friday to hold us over until next week. I’m not really prepared as I haven’t even picked a game yet. Aside from The Final Girl and Dungeon World 😉 any suggestions to fill a night to tide my group over until next week?

Any suggestions are appreciated and I want to thank you guys in advance!

I have been dying to play Masks ever since the KS.

I have been dying to play Masks ever since the KS. I’ve never had a chance. I’d love to run it as a 1-shot (or more) for one of my home groups, but while they tend to be into supers as much as the next gamer, they are pretty trad and I know they will be thrown off by the premise focusing on youths who are impressionable trying to find identity in a world trying to tell them what to be.

I can already hear them saying, “Being a teen/young adult sucked the first time around – why would I want to do it again!” or “Why not just play Mutants and Masterminds? It’s so much more flexible/simulates powers better/yadda yadda yadda.” Or, “Taej, are you embarrassed by how much teen tv trash you watch on The CW?” Well, maybe the last one is just my wife….

Anyway, while I do love that theme, I’m also really intrigued by the mechanics themselves. Does anyone have suggestions for a light – still supers, somehow justifying the label shifting mechanic – skin for the game that 40-something grognards who I love dearly might more readily embrace?

I was thinking something like The Incredibles/Watchmen (whoever thought of that as a pair?!), where society is kinda over supers and is trying to shoe horn them into other roles/hidey holes. But that seems a little weak.

As part of the Black Friday Sales (which are apparently a thing in the UK now, despite not celebrating US Thanksgiving) I picked up a Blue Snowball to replace crappy Condenser microphone.

My Goodness, the difference in sound quality is amazing.

Anybody have any advise how to get the best sound quality out of this microphone?

I’m conscious that my fans on my computer are not that quiet. Is there any way to do noise reduction in live hangouts with this?
