Once I’ve got my toes a bit wetter(?) playing with the Gauntlet, I’m interested in running a war saga a la Robotech, Mobile Suit Gundam, Starship Troopers, Armor or any of those stories where mecha/power suits are the basic front line of combat as opposed to godlike special forces like in Lion Voltron, Gundam Wing (is that the right one?), Evangelion, Rahxephone, etc.

I was a big fan of Heavy Gear and Jovian Chronicles, but while they do have cool anime-esque art and fun tactical robot combat, they’re pretty trad and don’t enforce the game I want. Coming from trad I want those epic space battles, but the big thing that I loved in those stories was the almost soap opera drama.

So, what are the pros and cons of Uncharted Worlds vs. other stuff I’m unfamiliar with (Impulse Drive, Infinite Galaxies, Adventures on Dungeon Planet, others)? Are there hacks or reskins that would work such as Rich reskinning The Few and 1%er, or maybe a less oppressive take on Night Witches? Although I haven’t read it, people talk about The Veil so highly because of its interpersonal play. Would it lend itself to a hack that adds something like Mecha World, or is that too much trouble – rather, are other full systems perfectly adequate?

Not married to PbtA, btw. Just seems like the rules base that most pushes spiraling fiction.

Long post, too many parentheses. I’m done. Thx in advance for any suggestions/insights.

I needed to apologize to several folks, one being Lowell Francis but also those who were participating in the “How to GM for the Gauntlet” Q&A and any wanted to participate but couldn’t as I took up a slot.

I don’t want to make an excuse for forgetting, and I’m not fishing for a “Don’t worry about it, Just don’t do it again,” from anyone. I fucked up.

I just wanted to let the people affected know that I’m sorry, and that I do want to participate in this community better than this first impression indicates.

1. Why are the (not sure of the correct word here) tags for people not popping up when I try to ping(?) them in a post?

2. I really like the worlds DP9 did for Heavy Gear/Jovian Chronicles and the anime, Gundam style personal war stories. Any suggestions for a game that does mecha well that better suits The Gauntlet? I’ve played and like Uncharted Worlds and have heard +Richard Rogers say that he likes Impulse Drive better. Would those do games where everybody has a ship, and differentiate them? Would it be better to start with something like The Watch (haven’t read it, but know it does personal war stories) or maybe even Nightwitches but add in mecha? Or maybe Adventures on Dungeon Planet (never read it)?

3. I loved the idea of kingdom building in Pathfinder’s Kingmaker Adventure Path (which confused me forever when I heard people here using AP for Actual Play) but in practice I didn’t like how self perpetuating yet meaningless it was. Any recommendations for a game that does that or have system that would bolt easily onto DW?

I have been dying to play Masks ever since the KS.

I have been dying to play Masks ever since the KS. I’ve never had a chance. I’d love to run it as a 1-shot (or more) for one of my home groups, but while they tend to be into supers as much as the next gamer, they are pretty trad and I know they will be thrown off by the premise focusing on youths who are impressionable trying to find identity in a world trying to tell them what to be.

I can already hear them saying, “Being a teen/young adult sucked the first time around – why would I want to do it again!” or “Why not just play Mutants and Masterminds? It’s so much more flexible/simulates powers better/yadda yadda yadda.” Or, “Taej, are you embarrassed by how much teen tv trash you watch on The CW?” Well, maybe the last one is just my wife….

Anyway, while I do love that theme, I’m also really intrigued by the mechanics themselves. Does anyone have suggestions for a light – still supers, somehow justifying the label shifting mechanic – skin for the game that 40-something grognards who I love dearly might more readily embrace?

I was thinking something like The Incredibles/Watchmen (whoever thought of that as a pair?!), where society is kinda over supers and is trying to shoe horn them into other roles/hidey holes. But that seems a little weak.

Because of some difficulties traveling (bad roll), they had a random encounter with a group of gnolls that was meant as an obstacle. I tried to depict the gnolls as big and very dangerous. I had some of the gnolls leave in small groups to scout but made it clear that they weren’t too far away. I let them spy the group without being discovered, and they were discussing options of sneaking around but losing time vs. a risky distraction that would let them barge through – when the paladin decides to literally shout Leroy Jenkins and charge into the group. I asked, “Really, are you sure you want to do this? You’ll be outnumbered, there’s more out there, and the rest of the group wants to avoid combat,” he still wanted to charge.

Long story story short, he and another player have dead characters, two other kids are running but are being chased, and only 1 kid has a character who actually snuck away. I’m not worried about it fictionally, but how do you manage your group dynamic when one player torpedoes the game? Especially if their ages are 12-14, and there is out of game dating drama that I don’t get involved in going on as well? And the kid who started the whole ball rolling just returned to the group after a summer hiatus?

So, I’m not super experienced with PbtA, but I am super experienced with laziness.

So, I’m not super experienced with PbtA, but I am super experienced with laziness. I seat-of-my-pants, hand-wave created a custom move for setting up an ambush because I wasn’t sure how to give my players some mechanical benefit for the planning they were starting to do fictionally… and to tell the truth, I didn’t want to sit through them debating ambush minutia all night that might end up going out the window once $#!+ hit the fan when I could start the combat right away and back load the ambush.

I had them decide who was the lynch pin of the plan and had that person roll+INT. The others could roll to aid if they committed to a stratagem that they would implement in the ambush. It mimicked Defend, except I let them spend the hold to do something cool/useful in the combat.

So I feel like I should actually formalize it. I have this so far, but would love some help to improve it:

When you spend time setting up plans for an ambush, roll+INT: on a 10+, Hold 3; on a 7-9, Hold 1. During the ambush, spend Hold 1 for 1 to pick one

**interrupt the fiction to tell how your plan mitigates a tight spot

**set up a ploy to automatically Defy Danger that takes advantage of the current situation

**retcon the fiction to allow you to trigger a move

Those were essentially the three things they did in general.

For the first, the Ranger was faux-tied up to the back of the Druid shape-shifted into a donkey. The ruse went sideways, and the Ranger who had just been stabbed and was about to get thrown to the side as the Druid took bear form spent a Hold to avoid the damage and neatly roll to her feet armed with her bow because they had practiced the dismount.

For the second, a group of brigands was marching into the trading post the party had agreed to defend, so their concealed pit trap at the fort’s entrance automatically worked instead of them needing to roll Defy Danger.

For the third, the Ranger wanted to Call a Shot instead of just Volley but the brigands had already noticed their companions in trouble and were looking around warily as they advanced, so she spent Hold to say that she timed some rapid, precise shots to go off as the bandits’ horses and wagon collapsed into the pit so she would have had surprise.

Thoughts on wording? On if I let them get away with too much?

Wasn’t sure if i should post this here or in Gauntlet Hangouts since it’s at a store.

Okay, so I apparently can’t figure out how to search old posts and am too lazy to go through the old podcasts to find what I’m looking for. Where can I find Jason Cordova’s example notes on adapting a module for DW? I’m using DW and Perilous Wilds to run Paizo’s Kingmaker Adventure Path, and I’m realizing that a lot of their encounters are just purposeless combat. Even the big set piece things are really passive, and I need to give them motivation, or rather invent an impending doom.

Also, I’m starting a pbp US game, and was wondering if there is a good character sheet to use for online. I liked the DW Google Doc that we used for Hester’s Mill – is there an US version that autopopulates moves and such as choices are made? I’d love to learn to make one, but see aforementioned laziness, and the school year is about to start, and excuses. 🙂

So, I just started running DW at my flgs for 5 people, 4 of whom I don’t know at all. I’m pretty stoked for it, as I’ll be using Perilous Wilds to improvise a lot of the encounters but running the over arching plot line of the Kingmaker adventure path from Paizo (which I’ve wanted to play forever, but not at the expense of actually playing Pathfinder…).

2 of the players joined after the first session and have yet to pick classes, and what they are interested in I have heard weird things about.

The actual questions are these: I’ve heard people on the podcasts say the Bard is terrible, so what’s so bad about it? The Playbooks I printed out include two that aren’t in core DW – Barbarian and Immolator. Where did those come from, and how do they mesh with the regular classes?

Last, I feel like I’ve heard that there is advice on converting existing modules to DW. Some of the encounters in Kingmaker seem like gratuitous combats with no actual context for the plot, just random stuff to encounter on the party’s exploration. I think Perilous Wilds should solve that on its own, but what are good resources for converting the root plot line?

Thx!
