It was kinda funny. I got loose from official duties long enough to go attend a panel about Narrative Authority, given by Chris Avellone of Planescape and Fallout fame. In the Q&A, a lot of the questions that came up were things like “how do I make the players care about the world?” and “how do I work their characters into the fiction?”

I feel like next year we need to have The Gauntlet giving some panels, because so many of those questions have already been solved thanks to storygaming! There’s so many people who don’t realize we have not only the answers, but the amazing game experience they’ve been looking for! Almost every question that was asked could of been answered with an hour of running Dungeon World or any PbtA game I feel!

Shout-out to the Gauntleteers who were also there at con!

I remember one of my favorite things from my old D&D days was pouring over the seemingly endless amount of splat books pumped out, looking for interesting new classes and ideas. Things like Angelkite and the ‘World derivatives kinda do the same by introducing new and interesting playbooks, but I have yet to see something that gives me the same feeling come out.

Tonight for One Shot Wednesdays, I learned important lessons from The Gauntlet.

Tonight for One Shot Wednesdays, I learned important lessons from The Gauntlet. That Mars is not the kind of place to raise a kid, that sashimi is the most important form of sushi, that Shia Labouf is unstoppable, and that I am never going to win a game of Jenga against these guys.

Thanks for Aaron Mosley for running Dread, Stephen Crawford for bringing Mission: Red Planet, and to Kristen D for bringing Sushi-Go! And thanks to everyone who attended, Scott Owen, Christopher Brewer, Thomas, and Fred!

The gods show their displeasure by flooding Houston, home of Gauntlet Classic! In compensation, we have kidnapped Steve and forced him to play a deadly game of Robo Rally! Sadly, he was able to escape with a well timed distraction, and has escaped the flood in his ark, carrying two of every kind of game.

Thanks for Aaron Wilkinson who pulled an amazing last minute win, to Scott Owen and Kristen D for bringing an amazing dinner plan, and Steve Mains for helping organize a last minute game session!

T.S. Elliot may have named April the cruelest month, but for Gauntlet Houston, May has squeezed us with it’s cold grip.

On Friday 13th, we held a farewell to our comrades Steve Mains and Daniel Lewis, as their paths take them from the mother-ship into the wider world. They shall be missed, and yet we look forward to their stories of success, as they go forward to found new Gauntlets, and spread the joy of gaming to their new communities. Godspeed gentlemen, we wish you well.

With their passing, the torch of Houston Gauntlet falls to the newer membership, myself included in that group, to plan, host, and grow the group. I won’t lie, the potential for failure scares me, and I worry that my efforts will lead to it’s disbandment.

But even amid the worry, I have hope. Steve Mains was able to wrap up the final Imperial Assault campaign, as well as join the Friday sessions of Masks, where his actions will linger for the rest of the game. Daniel Lewis was able to join us for our latest session of “The Final Girl” which we can now direct people to buy from DriveThru! Kristen D  has debuted her GM career with “Kobolds Ate My Baby”, and I’ve already been approached by others interested in running their own games!

The times may be a changing, but I think our outlook is fairly bright! Thanks to Jess Scott, Scott Owen, Aaron Wilkinson, Fred Uhlmann, parrish warren, Anne Warren, Shaye Horwitz  +Andrew Kolb, +Christopher Brewer, +aaron mosley, +Kevin Whitaker, and +James Merlott for coming out to play and to enjoy!
