Time for people to start looking for a different place to host all of these gaming-related communities that currently live on Google+.

Hi, I am searching for Ideas and input for my next adventure.

Hi, I am searching for Ideas and input for my next adventure.

Hi, I am searching for Ideas and input for my next adventure.

I don’t know how many of you know the Tale of Krabat.

Krabat is a boy in wartorn eastern europe. He wanders around the small villages as a beggar with two outher boys.

One night he has a dream and leave his friends to become a journeyman to a miller.

The miller has 11 other journeyman and after a time Krabat learns that they can do magic and that the miller is a sorcerer who teaches them. Later he becomes one of them and learns magic too.

After he fell in love with a girl from a nearby village and from there, there different endings.

Sometimes the girl saves Krabat, sometimes the girl dies and Krabat takes revenge.

But my idea is to turn it a little bit upside down.

With help from a german community I shaped the Idea, that the Miller is, first of all, a woman, a former Paladin who lives in the mill with 12 journeyman. This kids could transform into demons. But if it doesn’t happen bevor their 18 bithday they transform never.

So the Paladin has this magic sword, witch keeps her alive and infuses her with the Power of the demon. So if their is longer no transformation the Paladin gets older.

My hope is that my players recognize the tale and think, that the miller is evil, especially because she is old by their first meeting and the other day (after she killed a transformed childdemon) you she in the middle of her prime.

Any tipps how I could make the adventure more interesting or better?

In a Sideplot there is a Monster in the nearby village witch collects hearts of people and can controll the heartless puppets. The Monster lives in fear of the Paladin and could send the players after her.

Howdy!

Howdy!

Howdy! I wanted to share this play test report by Kai Poh about a hack of Honey Heist called Magic Swords — a micro-game where you play (you guessed it) magic swords trying to break out of a dungeon! Kai also gives us a quick peek into the flourishing Malaysian design scene — with such tantalizing teasers as a hack of Monsterhearts to emulate Crazy Rich Asians! (Yes, please!) Kai is encouraging these creators to play test, play test, play test. Which made me think of the Gauntlet. Wouldn’t it be cool if we could help test out some of these games? Anyway, I just wanted to facilitate an introduction between Kai and our community. I know I will be keeping an eye out for more posts and games from Kai! Cheers!

Malaysian designer OneRudeFlowers made a hack of Honey Heist and it’s about Magic Swords breaking out of prison! Elisha and I did an Actual Play recording of it and you can find out how it plays for a one-on-one session. The newest episode of The Gauntlet Podcast is here! In this one, Lowell Francis and I are joined by community member Patrick Knowles to discuss the games we played in September. The conversation is really fantastic, probably one of the best we’ve had this year.

Thanks to Paul Edson for the excellent edit.

Enjoy!

Night Witches: Koldunya

Night Witches: Koldunya

Night Witches: Koldunya

I wouldn’t normally announce something like this on a Saturday, but I am presently slave to the vicissitudes of Kickstarter.

I am very excited to announce the newest stretch goal for the Codex Volume 1 Kickstarter: if we can hit $17,000, Jason Morningstar will write Night Witches: Koldunya, the first major expansion for the award-winning Night Witches game. Here is Jason’s description:

Religion was brutally suppressed in the pre-war Soviet Union, but both Orthodoxy and syncretic folk ways survived. The women of the 588th were a mix of true believers, cultural Christians, and atheists. All of them were familiar with the superstitious magic of the Russian countryside, and whether they believed in it or not, it was suffused in the air they breathed. Witches – koldunya – were real, and they could heal and curse. Even the staunchest Soviet atheist and most rational technocrat would think twice before crossing the path of one. Of course magic isn’t real, but intention is everything…

Night Witches: Koldunya adds two new Natures and a whole suite of witchcraft moves to the game. It gives you a background on religion and anti-religious efforts in the Soviet Union before the war, and allows you to add a strange and surreal veneer to your game.

The Jackdaw is a gregarious, easily distracted lover of light – a healer and soothsayer. The Nightjar, in contrast, is a solitary creature of darkness, often reviled and capable of great mischief. Both are koldunya, and both are full-fledged pilots and navigators within the regiment. Will they use their gifts in the service of God, the devil, the 588th or comrade Stalin?

This is, frankly, epic. I would be over the moon if we could hit this stretch goal, so please, please, please re-share and spread the word!

Some folks have asked how limited the Codex Volume 1 book will be.

Some folks have asked how limited the Codex Volume 1 book will be.

Some folks have asked how limited the Codex Volume 1 book will be. I think they want to know if they can just pick it up later. The answer is “It is going to be extremely limited.” We’re doing a single print run, sending them to our backers, selling whatever is left through various channels, and then that’s it! We’re not a traditional publisher, and so my intention is to print as few of these books as possible (margin be damned).

If we decide to do Volume 2 or Volume 3 down the road (spoiler alert: we will) and you’re a completionist who regrets not getting Volume 1 when you had the chance… I don’t know what to tell you. You will be out of luck. Maybe convince someone to sell you theirs?

It is not feasible for us to do another print run of this book, point blank (we’re already going to barely squeak out a “profit” on this one). And even if it was feasible, The Gauntlet is simply not moved by the business considerations that might make us want to do it again.
