I only recently discovered The Gauntlet and have been rapidly consuming the back catalogue. Thank you for putting out a high quality, informative and engaging show.

While offering comments, I thought I would point people towards my favorite RPG-related podcast, Misdirected Mark. It’s got a wide variety of content but I feel the GM advice on the show really shines. Note the format changes significantly about episode 140 and so if you go back to earlier content that might be a good place to start (also the run from 141-145 has some REALLY good stuff and so is a great place to start). People might be familiar with one of the hosts, Phil Vechione from his writing for Gnome Stew and Engine Publishing (Masks, Unframed, Focal Point,…)

Anyway, thanks for The Gauntlet and people might like to try Misdirected Mark.

Best Practices for Teaching New Games

While listening to the episode with Epidiah Ravachol, I was struck how well Jason Cordova was able to sum up games concisely. Since The Gauntlet is is firmly in the playing games camp, what are the best techniques to teach games and to prepare to teach games? Assume that no one besides the facilitator has read the rules.

Episode 32 of The Gauntlet Podcast is out today. This one has a pleasantly internal focus, which makes it a nice break from our designer-focused episodes of late.

Our main topic is inspired by the article found here:

I need a logo for a new podcast project.

I need a logo for a new podcast project. I can pay a commission. Something that kind of echoes the Dungeon World cover art would be great. I had in mind an adventurer looking around in the dark with a torch, perhaps reading the name of the podcast carved on a stone wall. Something with a distinctly old-school vibe. Feel free to share this with any artists you might know, and have them get in touch with me via Hangouts chat.

You guys.

You guys.

You guys. Can we talk about how much effort the Guantlet podcast editors put into the show each week? For every 30 minutes of cast, they dedicate roughly 2 hours to the editing. They painstakingly zap every ‘uhm’ and ‘like’ they can; they erase all the weird pauses so everyone sounds like a genius; they mix and suppress and squelch and collate and whatever else (I’m just making up words, tbh, because I am an idiot who has no understanding of what goes on). They’re always looking for a way to improve our process.

And they are stalwart guardians, let me assure you. They rescue me from my worst tendencies (I should perhaps run my written posts by them, too, now that I think about it). Sometimes we have an audio disaster, like last week, but they dive in and spend hours recovering the episode. There are some nights when I get the QC back, and I know they just spent all night working on it. And they do all of this in addition to co-hosting the show and helping me out with content!

On a personal note, I feel very lucky to have them on my side. They are both brilliant. I am constantly inspired by Dan’s thoughts on the interaction of mechanics and play, and he has introduced me to so many ideas I have internalized. And he’s just a really good friend, to boot. I am more recently part of Rich’s orbit, but he is teaching me so much about why we should expand the number of voices associated with The Gauntlet, and the value of letting others play with my toys. I am ashamed to say it’s something I need, being very jealous by nature. He is an amazingly nice and patient guy.

And do you see how this post suddenly became about me? Christ…

Please say thanks to Daniel Lewis and Richard Rogers if you like our show. They are amazing and tireless, and we are so lucky to have them!

We have some evidence that listeners may prefer the normal show format to the interview format.

We have some evidence that listeners may prefer the normal show format to the interview format. We’re thinking of having future designer guests come on as co-hosts of the normal format show, but make the work they’re doing a feature of the opening segment and main topic. This will make more sense when you hear the episode releasing on Friday, but I’d like to get some feedback on it now.

We just finished recording tonight’s podcast with our guest co-hosts    Robert Bohl  and Paul Czege

We just finished recording tonight’s podcast with our guest co-hosts    Robert Bohl  and Paul Czege . We had a side conversation involving the value of the podcast itself, and I wanted to share some of my thoughts about it here.

Our listenership is not huge. We discuss games that are a niche within an already niche hobby, and that will naturally depress the size of our audience. But we love putting the show together, because we think people need to know about these games. And even though the audience isn’t big right now, it will definitely grow, and our archive will be waiting for those new listeners.

I strongly believe that even if we can’t move the needle for a designer’s project today (and sometimes we can; I happen to think we helped a bit on Lovecraftesque, for example), we may very well do so in the future. Robert mentioned that most of his Misspent Youth sales come from people hearing about it from old episodes of the Jank Cast. I myself relied heavily on the Jank Cast and Walking Eye Podcast to get up to speed on indie games when I was returning to the hobby.

In short, I think we’re doing the right thing. There is tremendous value in an evergreen archive. And in the meantime, while we wait for the audience to show up, I am very grateful for those of you who have chosen to spend time with us now.
