We just finished recording tonight’s podcast with our guest co-hosts    Robert Bohl  and Paul Czege . We had a side conversation involving the value of the podcast itself, and I wanted to share some of my thoughts about it here.

Our listenership is not huge. We discuss games that are a niche within an already niche hobby, and that will naturally depress the size of our audience. But we love putting the show together, because we think people need to know about these games. And even though the audience isn’t big right now, it will definitely grow, and our archive will be waiting for those new listeners.

I strongly believe that even if we can’t move the needle for a designer’s project today (and sometimes we can; I happen to think we helped a bit on Lovecraftesque, for example), we may very well do so in the future. Robert mentioned that most of his Misspent Youth sales come from people hearing about it from old episodes of the Jank Cast. I myself relied heavily on the Jank Cast and Walking Eye Podcast to get up to speed on indie games when I was returning to the hobby.

In short, I think we’re doing the right thing. There is tremendous value in an evergreen archive. And in the meantime, while we wait for the audience to show up, I am very grateful for those of you who have chosen to spend time with us now.

  1. I do an indie RPG podcast as well, and look at it much the same way.

Podcasts, especially the Jank Cast had a major effect on my mindset about the hobby, but mostly, I really enjoy doing a podcast. It’s an excuse to regularly talk to my friends about topics we’re all interested in.

  3. It’s a well produced inclusive podcast that I find thoroughly enjoyable. I tried the jankcast but it was too sprawling and anecdotal for my tastes. Gauntlet is a beacon of hope that there are good gamers out there! I’m heading to the only con I go to each year, indiecon. I’m just wondering how I could advertise the podcast there?

  5. I also am part of a podcast (Fastcast) that is more “generally nerdy” but veers into indie RPGs from time to time, such as our most recent episodes about Threeforged.

If you want more listeners, throw a bone to D&D/PF players with an episode covering an aspect of those games once in a while. Make those episodes as useful as your other ones. Name drop, contrast and compare indie games with them in a positive way, and I bet you’ll soon draw more listeners to your other shows.

  7. Thanks, Larry Spiel. I am told your interview with Mark Diaz Truman was pretty good; I need to check that one out.

Eadwin Tomlinson Agreed on Jank’s tendency to sprawl. Their most recent episodes (the last year or so) have been particularly unfocused (Todd’s move from Chicago was a real blow to the quality of that show; something I desperately tried to avoid with my move to NJ). As far as promoting us, it would be great if all listeners gave us occasional shout outs to their various social media platforms. Not too sure how to handle Indie Con. Depending on when the Con is, I suppose I could send you a t-shirt?

Tim Jensen Good idea on the PF players. Making sport of them is part of my ‘brand,’ so to speak, but the fact of the matter is I myself am a former PF player and, ultimately, their fun is no less valid than mine. I’m going to place a very heavy emphasis on Dungeon World and the OSR in 2016, and I think there might be some room there to bring some of those people in.

  9. Howdy! I am a newer listener, just started in the past few weeks and I have listened to a half dozen of your podcasts and enjoyed them. While I am more of a trad gamer than a story gamer, and I do not always agree with everything you say, I enjoy learning about the story games you play and I enjoy the obvious passion you have for the games you play. You are currently one of my top three podcasts.

  11. Welcome, Steven Warble! I give the trad gamers a lot of shit, but it comes from a place of love, haha. At my core, I’m a trad gamer, too. I have too much built-up affection for D&D, Shadowrun, Rifts, and the like, not to be. The podcast is heavily skewed toward story games, but each of us came from those other traditions, and I think it improves the discussion.

  13. Jason Cordova

Agreed. I cannot understand some folks who think Story Games aren’t “real” rpgs, or trad games are all hack-n-slash. I believe that games – like music – are best when different kinds influence and inform each other.

  15. Jason Cordova I’m actually thinking a flier with g+ stuff and podcast stuff might work – think you can knock something up next week? I’ll print it here and leave them lying around for idle gamers to unearth… An unearthed arcana flier if you will

  17. Yeah, sure. Actually, I may ask Daniel Fowler to work something up, since he is our resident graphics guy (Fowler: you’ve been promoted from Head of Internal Security to Minister of Propaganda!)
