Keepers of the Gauntlet Writing Contest!

I am delighted to announce Codex will be hosting a writing contest called “Keepers of the Gauntlet.”

New supporters of the Gauntlet Patreon get a fun, evocative title, such as “Keeper of the Unsolvable Riddle” or “Keeper of the Six-Tailed Dog Beasts.” For this contest you will choose one of those Keeper titles and write a Dungeon World starter or OSR scenario inspired by it or that references it in some way. Anyone can participate, Patrons and non-Patrons alike. If you’re a Patron, you do not have to use your own Keeper title for your scenario.

The deadline for submissions is October 16th at 11:59 PM EDT. The winner and runner(s)-up will be announced during Gauntlet Con.

To check out the prizes and submission guidelines, follow the link below!

If you have any questions, you can post them in this thread.

Mountain Witch is a very intense game, I’ve enjoyed it a few times, and look forward to seeing a new edition of it.

After many, many… many… years, I am finally finished with my revision of The Mountain Witch.

I feel really good about this version of the book. What started with a “little” cleaning up quickly turned into a 80-90% rewrite. I worked hard at incorporating updated explanations and various “house rules” that have become my standard mode of playing the game. The game advice chapter—which I long felt was underdeveloped in the original version—is now the longest section of the book.

At this point I am going to spend the next month or so working out the production details before starting up a Kickstarter campaign. After the project is funded, I will send the book to an editor, then to layout, and finally to the printers.

So stay tuned! There is one section that I want to crowdsource some opinions on (Abilities), which I will post in a couple days.

PS: Where else should I post this announcement besides Story-Games?

Here is a link to Session 3 of The Bloody Road to Bellet Osc! There was a lot packed into this session: Rook the Flim-Flam Man, Sparkles & Yoyo, the “vampire” Aloester Graymantle, the “lich” Vegreet, the Fabulous Fish Parade, the demon lord of the Phantom Court, the tragic “immortality” of innkeeper Sarapha, and more! We had comedy, we had mystery, we had dread–and not a single combat in sight. This is how I like to do Dungeon World.

Also: if you own Codex – Madness, this session and the previous session are my implementation of the Asylum City DW starter found there. If you’d like to see that material translated from the page to actual play, I can’t recommend this session more.

Thanks to the players: Jennifer Erixon David LaFreniere Fraser Simons and Richard Rogers!

Tom McGrenery (my charming co-host on Fear of a Black Dragon) has put together a free version of Malandros, his (definitely, officially not PbtA) game about Rio de Janeiro at the end of the 19th century. It’s a great game that has been featured in Codex, and was nominated for an Indie Groundbreaker. Tom is also running it for Gauntlet Con.

My hope is to expand Gauntlet Hangouts by a significant amount next year.

My hope is to expand Gauntlet Hangouts by a significant amount next year. We’re going to make more of those precious-as-gold $7 Patreon spots available, but that means we need more game runners. Importantly, we need game runners who are confident in their ability to do a good job.

I rarely pose questions like this to the community, but I’d like to know: What would you need from us (i.e. the Gauntlet regulars) to feel confident running games online for our community?

We’ve got a few things simmering right now:

Lowell Francis is helping out individual GMs who want tips and guidance.

Kate Bullock set-up a GM Support channel on our Slack.

I have made my Hangouts videos available for the express purpose of showing how I run a game.

But I’m interested in all your ideas. What is your barrier to running games online for Gauntlet Hangouts, and what can we do to remove those barriers?
