Hi folks

Hi folks

Hi folks,

The small group of RPer’s I’m a part of is running a “one shot invitational” to get some more of the community at large in Iowa City involved in our effort to tell awesome stories with awesome people in person. I have elected to run “A Red and Pleasant Land,” but I want to convert it into Dungeon World. I am currently making my way through with scribbles all along the margins and having a great time, but I wanted to ask for a bit of sage advice from you grizzled vets:

were there any particular parts that were difficult to transition ARPL over to DW? Anything I should avoid within the parameters of a one shot?

or perhaps, was there a particular sticking point that you wish you would have known going in that you only puzzled out after the fact?

Thanks so much, you folks are a gem (a very rare and glowing one that spells doom for all!!!) !!!!

Okay, this is super inspiring.

Okay, this is super inspiring.

Okay, this is super inspiring. What is the system where you’d run with all these? Black Stars Rise? Tales from the Loop? Tremulus? Soth? (Don’t think so.) I’m sure I’m missing something.

I’d like to do some crowdsourcing for the miscellany in Codex – Crystal. The miscellany is called “Three dozen rumors about Crystal Lake.” Crystal Lake is a fictional, semi-rural town with a dark history and plenty of weird residents. Think: Twin Peaks, a slightly dialed-down Nightvale, or Derry from the Stephen King novel It.

What have you heard about Crystal Lake?

Submissions need to be a single sentence or 2-3 short sentences. By submitting here, you’re agreeing to let us use it (you’ll get a credit on the issue). Importantly, we’re looking for rumors that are weird, scary, and/or tell us about the town’s seedy past.

Here are some examples:

“A murder occurs at the old post office every thirty four years, give or take.”

“Once per day, Ernestine Jenkins makes the long trek from her house on Rutherford Street to the downtown pharmacy, where she purchases a Cherry Coke. She does not speak a word during her walk, but if you stop her, she will whisper something to you about the town’s ancient past.”

“In 1954, the popular Heartland Bandstand TV show filmed an episode in the Crystal Lake High School gymnasium. The episode never aired because the gym caught fire, killing almost everyone inside, including host Chet Fontaine. They say a single reel of film survived the fire and is passed around among collectors of macabre memorabilia.”

Nest Serpent: a breed of snake bred to protect the nests of Greenwater communities. It is assumed they were originally bred by the dragons before the servant races of the Water rose up in rebellion. They are now used by most of the egg-laying species of the region from the near human Malana (Feyrik in Ffolk tongue) to the more draconic Ranida (Rik in Ffolk tongue). They can be found in great numbers around communal hatching grounds where they typically watch for a kill dangerous pests such as rats and certain other snakes. Some individuals are known to keep nest serpents as personal pets. They are constrictors with smooth scales of dark green color. Immune to most venoms though only a small number are immune to mal viper venom. Sadly those are mostly identified only after being killed by other victims of the vipers.

Mal viper. Another bred species of snake these were created as a weapon of terror. A bite from the mal viper may result in death for the victim after an hour or so, though many adults survive, but the real danger lies in the fact that those under the effect of the mal viper venom behave in a mindlessly aggressive and violent fashion for almost the entire duration. Mal vipers are notoriously territorial and hostile, seemingly going out of their way and risking their own lives in order to bite other creatures they sense nearby. It is consistently hoped that they will go extinct as their hostility often extends to each other if nothing else is around. However they have persisted in being a threat in the Greenwater. Mal vipers seem to target children, nurseries, and hatcheries as well as their guardians first. They bear a similarity in appearance to nest serpents but have rougher scales and are slimmer in build.
