Hi folks

Hi folks

Hi folks,

The small group of RPer’s I’m a part of is running a “one shot invitational” to get some more of the community at large in Iowa City involved in our effort to tell awesome stories with awesome people in person. I have elected to run “A Red and Pleasant Land,” but I want to convert it into Dungeon World. I am currently making my way through with scribbles all along the margins and having a great time, but I wanted to ask for a bit of sage advice from you grizzled vets:

were there any particular parts that were difficult to transition ARPL over to DW? Anything I should avoid within the parameters of a one shot?

or perhaps, was there a particular sticking point that you wish you would have known going in that you only puzzled out after the fact?

Thanks so much, you folks are a gem (a very rare and glowing one that spells doom for all!!!) !!!!

  1. When I have run R&PL in DW (and I have done so several times) it’s a pretty heavy adaptation, which is to say I’m mostly going after the color and history of the setting more than the actual stats in the book (which aren’t really workable in DW). In which case, you can plan a one-shot adventure like you would normally, but in the setting of R&PL.

If you want to run it a little more directly out of the book without having to do a lot of converting, I strongly recommend World of Dungeons. I pretty much only do WoD for OSR modules now because I can get DW-like gameplay without having to change much in the actual module. For an example of how I do this, check out the first session of Death Frost Doom I ran recently: youtube.com – Saturday Morning Cartoons – Death Frost Doom (Session 1 of 4)

  3. Thanks Jason Cordova! I’m going after this mod mostly because some less than experienced players showed a keen interest in the setting. I assume world of dungeons might be a nice workaround to help some newer players feel comfortable. I remember you saying that you had some trouble with the opening session a long time ago (via R&PL to DW) and I just wanted to see if there was something within the world > internal logic/Alice-logic I should be on the lookout for! Thanks so much for your thought!

  5. If you can stomach rolling for initiative I suggest The Black Hack for OSR modules instead of WoD or DW. The move structure of PbtA games actually work against the basic premise of OSR adventures mainly that a) the PCs are slightly more competent than a normal person (whereas even in WoD they will succeed more often than not albeit with a 7-9) and b) the solutions the players come up with are more important than that their descriptions will trigger a move.

To get into the OSR mindset you might want to take a look at A quick primer to Old school gaming.

If you can’t stand initiative (and who could blame you?) maybe try Freebooters on the Frontier for an extra gritty DW variant.
