When you befriend a monkey, you may take this move when you level up:

Monkey Friends are the Best Friends

You and your monkey have a special bond.  You can’t talk to it per se, but it will always act as you wish it to.  It can serve as a distraction or an extra set of hands, giving you +1 on slight of hand attempts.

Once you’ve taken the Monkey Friends are the Best Friends move, you may take the following moves whenever you level up as if they were class moves:

Oooh, Shinies!

When you let your monkey roam for a while in a civilized area, roll +DEX.  On a 10+ he returns with an interesting or valuable item.  On a 7-9, the item is also dangerous or draws unwelcome attention to you.

Alarm Call

Your monkey is always looking out for you.  It will scream at the first sign of danger, ensuring that you are never surprised.  When an enemy would get the drop on you, you get to act first instead.

Dial M for Monkey

Your monkey is exceptionally smart.  It can follow complex orders and understand speech, though you are the only one who can understand what it says.  If you consult your monkey while attempting to discern reality, take +1.

  1. This is terrific! “Dial M for Monkey” might be the best name for a move I’ve read in some time. I was thinking of setting the next campaign on a chain of islands, so a monkey turning up is a real possibility.

    Two suggestions:

-Monkey Friends are the Best Friends should be re-written a little more broadly so anyone can take the CC (not just people with sleight of hand).

-Ooh, Shinies should be a straight-up roll (no stat modifier).

    This is really awesome.

  3. Yeah, I was stretching for some way to make Oooh, Shinies! a bit less failure prone, but I think you’re right that it can’t just function off of a stat.

I’ll see if I can come up with better wording for Monkey Friends are the Best Friends as well.

  5. Jason Cordova nice phrasing for “Monkey Friends…”.

I like the idea of adding skill synergy better than relying on bonds.  Maybe adding something like “Take +2 on this roll if you also have the ‘Dial M for Monkey’ move.”  Just doing a straight ‘+ # of monkey friend moves’ might make the modifier too high.  After all, monkeys shouldn’t be too reliable.
