Here is a fantastic illustration by Jesse Ross going into Codex – Decay. It’s for an original story game by Joshua Fox called The Big H. The Big H is about a superhero who falls from grace and the lesser heroes who looked up to him before he began his descent. I think this illustration perfectly captures the vibe of the game. It’s going to be awesome!

On the episode of Fear of a Black Dragon that comes out in a couple of weeks, Tom McGrenery and I are covering The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, a module for Advanced Fighting Fantasy, based on the old Steve Jackson gamebooks. A big part of the discussion is about enjoying something for nostalgic reasons (in this case, Tom’s nostalgia, as this series was a big deal for British nerds of a certain age) and how we can push past that nostalgia to find something about it that appeals to our modern sensibilities.

My question for you all: what is something RPG-related you enjoy almost entirely for reasons of nostalgia? In what ways does your nostalgia for that product inform the gamer you are today?

If you were going to play a story that was basically Westworld, but the resort was a dungeon and the guests are people going for a “dungeon crawl” vacation, which system or game could you play that story in?

Keepers of the Gauntlet Writing Contest!

I am delighted to announce Codex will be hosting a writing contest called “Keepers of the Gauntlet.”

New supporters of the Gauntlet Patreon get a fun, evocative title, such as “Keeper of the Unsolvable Riddle” or “Keeper of the Six-Tailed Dog Beasts.” For this contest you will choose one of those Keeper titles and write a Dungeon World starter or OSR scenario inspired by it or that references it in some way. Anyone can participate, Patrons and non-Patrons alike. If you’re a Patron, you do not have to use your own Keeper title for your scenario.

The deadline for submissions is October 16th at 11:59 PM EDT. The winner and runner(s)-up will be announced during Gauntlet Con.

To check out the prizes and submission guidelines, follow the link below!

If you have any questions, you can post them in this thread.

The newest episode of Fear of a Black Dragon is here! This is part one of a two-part series covering Yoon-Suin by David McGrogan. Part two will be released a little later this year.

If you like your nerdery in-depth and served with a side of good humor, FoaBD is the show for you! Yoon-Suin is a fantastic setting book, and Tom McGrenery and I cover all the bases of the Yellow City portion of the text, as well as have a terrific discussion about Orientalism in games. I think you’re going to like it a lot.

Thanks to Paul Edson for the fine edit.

Enjoy!

Here’s a sneak peek of the beautiful, haunting cover art for Codex – Decay. It’s by Claudia Cangini and features an undead lord posing for a portrait. From Claudia:

“I took inspiration from renaissance portraits because I liked the idea of decay being flaunted like it was something to be proud of. I thought it made it even more chilling.”

A question for the OSR folks: if you were designing a contest for OSR scenarios, how would you convey the idea that submissions should be compatible with multiple OSR systems? Are there certain systems or resources you would point them to?

Note: we’re not necessarily doing this; I’m just gathering information here.

Here is a link to Session 3 of The Bloody Road to Bellet Osc! There was a lot packed into this session: Rook the Flim-Flam Man, Sparkles & Yoyo, the “vampire” Aloester Graymantle, the “lich” Vegreet, the Fabulous Fish Parade, the demon lord of the Phantom Court, the tragic “immortality” of innkeeper Sarapha, and more! We had comedy, we had mystery, we had dread–and not a single combat in sight. This is how I like to do Dungeon World.

Also: if you own Codex – Madness, this session and the previous session are my implementation of the Asylum City DW starter found there. If you’d like to see that material translated from the page to actual play, I can’t recommend this session more.

“Late to the party, but I just wanted to say I recently discovered both your Discern Realities and your actual play vids (took me a while to realize that it was you in both as I discovered each through different routes!) but I gotta say, they are amazing!

The podcast is just amazing: Short and to the point, while retaining all the interesting bits. I love that you include some actual play.

The longer vids on youtube are great to watch as a GM, as they showcase very well that Dungeon World does not need to be about fighting, more fighting, mixed up with some fighting. While there is nothing wrong with that, my players like the social stuff and mysteries a lot as well, and you really do that extremely well. And people were telling me it couldn’t be done in Dungeon World! 🙂

Well anyway, just dropped in to declare my eternal love and to say: Keep up the good work! :)”
