The newest episode of Fear of a Black Dragon is here!

The newest episode of Fear of a Black Dragon is here! This is part one of a two-part series covering Yoon-Suin by David McGrogan. Part two will be released a little later this year.

If you like your nerdery in-depth and served with a side of good humor, FoaBD is the show for you! Yoon-Suin is a fantastic setting book, and Tom McGrenery and I cover all the bases of the Yellow City portion of the text, as well as have a terrific discussion about Orientalism in games. I think you’re going to like it a lot.

Thanks to Paul Edson for the fine edit.

Enjoy!

  1. Jason Cordova Tom McGrenery Just got around to listening to this episode, and then read a really good interview with the author. Interestingly, he describes the book as “more based on an orientalist’s view of Asia than Asia itself”, and describes himself as “a fan of orientalism”. He also talks about how much of an influence Tolkien was on his world creation. Worth a look.

  3. Saul Alexander Yeah, that was the interview that got me to order the book, a while back. That’s the art history sense of orientalism we briefly touch on in the episode — the “chinoiserie” sense — and, yeah, it’s neutral shading to positive in its implications. That idea of “this style is rad, we should do it too.”
