I wanted to share this episode of the podcast, Reveal, on the growth of the alt-right influence in comic books. A lot of Gauntleteers are comic book fans and also play superhero games like Masks, so I think it’s relevant to this community.

I found it particularly disturbing how Vox Day, an explicitly white nationalist, alt-right publisher, was able to co-opt an established, popular writer like Chuck Dixon. The interview with Dixon is a disturbing and fascinating look at the white male psyche. (Note: I fall within this demographic myself.) The host-interviewer repeatedly tries to get Dixon to acknowledge that his work for Vox Day legitimizes their bigoted agenda. Dixon seems incapable of even acknowledging his power within the industry. Rather, he performs this false modesty routine: “Who? Little old me? Power? Not me.”

Like a lot of white guys, Dixon is blind to his own privilege. I’m sure I’ve done the same or similar. Listening to this interview helps me to see how fucking disingenuous it is and how it is used to evade responsibility for our actions.

Sooo~~ This is a bit overdue, but I thought I would share because I can???

Sooo~~ This is a bit overdue, but I thought I would share because I can???

I am just over my first year with the Gauntlet, and in that time I’ve played approximately 130 games on the calendar — which I guess is like… pretty much just over 2 a week over a whole year (yes I think I may have a problem??). Shame I missed my official 100th game, but tbf mathematics and numbers have never been my jam.

Anyway, I’ve played (and run sometimes) such a variety of awesome games, with a lot of awesome people — including my sibling Alex McManamon, who I otherwise wouldn’t be able to game with because we live in different countries.

I’ve had the privilege of contributing to and doing the editing for the Gauntlet Codex, working with such a fantastic team of talented and passionate individuals. On top of that, this community has also created opportunities for other game design with Jesse Ross and Kyle Thompson, and game editing work with Fraser Simons on The Veil, Hack the Planet, and others, and Vee Hendro and Hayley G on Good Society — all of whom are such amazing designers who I constantly inspire me, so working with them is honestly such a treat.

I’ve made way too many amazing friends to count all over the world, and am so chuffed I get to spend time this year meeting a handful of lovely faces in person. I love each of you, and am really appreciative of all the support, care, and life you all give me.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I really have Shane Liebling to thank for all of the above, for chatting with me at 1am or so when we first were introduced at Camp Nerdly, and me going: “Ugh, I am so like. Miserable in Sydney. I haven’t played an rpg in like, six months, and I really miss the spirit and community that comes with a caring rpg community” and he was all, “Welllll, have you heard of the Gauntlet???”

And that was kind of the beginning really. Looking forward to seeing where it continues!!

Thank you for reading, and thank you all for making this community the amazing, safe, caring space that it is.

Greetings, all!

Kia ora!

Kia ora!

Kia ora! We’re so very pleased to have the Storybrewers — Vee Hendro and Hayley G as guests from good ol’ Straya in attendance at Gauntlet Con 2018!!

Vee Hendro is a game designer, graphic designer, and one half of Storybrewers Roleplaying. She has published two major games so far, Alas for the Awful Sea and Good Society: A Jane Austen RPG, and has no intention of slowing down! She is passionate about creating safe and fun RPG play spaces, and loves a good-looking book. You can find her IRL in Sydney, Australia, or online @Rocketeer_Vee.

Hayley is a game designer from the mythical land of Straya, and one half of storybrewers roleplaying. Together with co-designer Vee, she’s created games such as Alas for the Awful Sea, and Good Society. She’s shamelessly addicted to story games and cheese based snacks.

During Gauntlet Con, Hayley will run May He Most Favoured By the Gods Take Victory and The Fictionalised Memoirs of Harriette Wilson and Her Sisters.

Please do check out the Gauntlet Con website to keep up with other fab news! http://www.gauntlet-rpg.com/gauntlet-con.html

(I can say ‘Straya, right? Even though I’m a New Zealander?)

Hello, Gauntleteers!

Hello, Gauntleteers!

Hello, Gauntleteers! The Kickstarter for Thirteen Demon Princes has launched, and I think it may tickle the fancy of some folks around here. 🙂 The game is by Taylor LaBresh, whom you may know as the designer of the many fine offerings from Riverhouse Games and/or as the host of the Game Closet podcast (on which Jason was a guest not too long ago!). Thirteen Demon Princes is an RPG of Hell’s favorite dating show, based on the framework of the game Singularity (Aura Belle and Josh Jordan). Contestants on the show are (as you might guess) demonic royalty, and they vie to win the affection of the Morning Star. Each demon is representative of their domain in Hell, and each will have different feelings about and approaches to love. For example there’s The Demon Of Dreams, Whose Nightmares Rock The Mountains And Whose Visions Put The Mistiest Rainforests To Shame. And The Demon Of Scorn, Who Takes In Those Shunned And Who Forges Weapons Made Of Spite Itself. It’s weird, emotional, and fun, and so I thought it would go quite well around here. 🙂 Character kits are contributed by a suite of guest writers, including Aura Belle (of the original Singularity), Tobie Abad (A Single Moment, and also Sickening Queens, a Drag Race-based Fiasco playset!), and…somehow…also myself. It’s a seriously good team, and I’m very excited for this game.

I hope you check it out, and if you like it, please back it and spread the word! Thanks, all!
