The Year in Horror RPGs 2017

This Halloween on The Gauntlet Blog I’ve belatedly decided to look at Horror RPGs published in 2017.

I like to wait until late in the year to see how the previous year’s releases have shaken out. I focused on core rules with a print version or a pdf of 100+ pages or so. Items have a small summary and/or minimal commentary. DTRPG has sale prices on this, the last day of their Spooky Games Sale 2018.

1000 Arrows: Questions, questions, questions

1000 Arrows: Questions, questions, questions

1000 Arrows: Questions, questions, questions

When this Kickstarter was announced, it started generating questions on the Gauntlet Slack. Concerns about cultural sensitivity, the Korean stretch goal, why try for a historical RPG if you’ve got magic, etc. Considering how these questions could apply to so many games in development by our members, I wanted to bring this out here for a wider discussion. If we’re lucky, Brennan Taylor and James Mendez Hodes , the designers of this game, will chime in with the hows and whys.

Full disclosure: I’ve played 1000 Arrows with Brennan running it as part of Gauntlet Con, and I played in the cyber skin of this at Dexcon with Mendez running it. I’ve also talked with both of them about their designs on other projects and have been impressed with the thought that has gone into their works, and their openness to questions and critique.

I’ve written a very silly one-shot scenario (for any ruleset) for Halloween and run it a couple of times for friends. You play candidates in a contest to be Dracula’s new bride.

I decided to tart it up a little and release it. Hope it’s ok to post about it here – I would very much welcome feedback. It’s one thing to jot down some notes for yourself, and another to give guidance in writing on how to run such a thing.

The free version is on my blog (https://mottokrosh.com/posts/2018/10/a-bride-for-dracula/), and a nicely laid out PDF with a little extra art is on DriveThruRPG (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/256689/A-Bride-for-Dracula?src=gp1).

I’m very interested in hearing criticisms of Metatopia.

I’m very interested in hearing criticisms of Metatopia.

I’m very interested in hearing criticisms of Metatopia. I have been to the convention a few times myself and have a collection of personal thoughts with regards to what they could be doing better, but I’m curious to hear from other folks. Anything is fair game: cost, accessibility, exclusivity, technology, scheduling—whatever.

And it doesn’t have to be a criticism about Metatopia per se, but even just logistical or travel things that make it a difficult convention to attend would be good to know about.

I have been thinking about building something online and better, but I need to know about all the gaps first, to see if we can actually add to or improve what it means to be a playtest-focused convention.

Comments are off. I’m only interested in hearing these thoughts in private, so please Slack DM me or send me a private G+ post (if you’re not on our Slack).

I just got through like the first 15 episodes of DR.

I just got through like the first 15 episodes of DR.

This is a great podcast. I went through lots of podcasts back in the Forge days when indie RPGS were becoming a thing. This one by far is the best one I have heard.

I learned a lot even though I felt I was an experienced DW GM.

DW is my prime reason for coming to the guantlet. Listening to Discern Realities was the prime reason for me getting back into looking for DW gaming after taking a break from RPG for a few years while I was an expat in Alberta. Now that I am settled I would like to get back into it again.

I think DR has loads of great ideas, and why I have become a Pateron.

I hope the Gauntlet continues to support DW even as it broadens its horizons (which is also exciting to see)

I know I would be interested in topics such as playing with kids. A lot of folks may only have time with hectic schedules to play with Family. It creates a different kind of game. Ideally I would love to see something that is kid friendly – but not smarmy. I know I try that with my kids. It is interesting, they have great ideas (sometimes repetitive or cliche) but other times fresh.

But at the same time the games let us explore ideas with the kids about inequality and how consequences have consequences.

One of the things I know I have discovered, is that I used to think I wanted deep and gritty or more tension in games. Think TV MA. I know that abounds in indie RPGs and the OSR (which I also follow and play using moldvay or SW white box). But through play discovered what I really wanted was more TV 14.

More flight of dragons and the hobbit and lord of the rings and he-man (maybe a little less cheese) or fighting fantasy sorcery and less game of thrones in your face or night of the living dead I only found that out through play though.

That is not to say that I don’t enjoy some deep gaming, once ina while with the right group. I have played for example Polaris which basically you either die or become a demon (I died). We did the whole thing with the ambience but that is for another post sometime. A really great game if you haven’t tried it, and one of the first GMless games.

It would be great if you are getting more voices on DR to hear about some different styles of play with Dungeon World.

That was a longer post than I was meaning to. So let me summarize by saying great podcast!
