I was thinking about the new coloring books and how they are different from the ones I grew up with. The majority of the coloring books you see today are packed full of lines so the person coloring them in will have a million tiny spaces to fill. There used to by larger fields to wrestle with. You had to decide whether to color them in with one color or be adventurous and try some kind of shading or mixing.

That got me thinking about the old D&D manuals versus all the new glossy books. Ray Otus and I have talked about this a little before but I’m still struggling to understand it completely. For some reason I prefer a lot of those old B&W images when it comes to gaming.

I really admire the art in the Pathfinder, D&D and other fancy-schmancy books of today. There is no question that the artists are very skilled. In some way, I think they’ve taken away my agency. When I look at some full-color, glossy image depicting a scene I might encounter in the game, I feel like an observer. When I look at something with fewer of the details filled in for me, I find it easier to project myself into the action.

What do you think?

I got my Fight Cards in PDF from Operator RPG … love them, but reminded me that I always wanted to make a roleplaying game out of the cards from Lunch Money …. awkward Card game about school yard fights.

We’d like to do some crowdsourcing for the Miscellany in Codex – Lies.

We’d like to do some crowdsourcing for the Miscellany in Codex – Lies. The Miscellany is called “Three Dozen Scoundrels.” Submissions need to be a single sentence, or 2-3 very short sentences. By submitting here, you’re agreeing to let us use it (you’ll get a credit on the issue). We’re looking for evocative stuff. The purpose of the Miscellany is to inspire the reader.

Your scoundrel can be for any genre or time period. Importantly, they need a name and a short description of their villainous deeds. Here are some examples:

“Jalussa the Merciless, Pirate Queen of the Western Sea. She kidnapped Prince Lomaran and then refused to turn him over when the ransom was paid, first keeping the young man as a pet, then training him to be an exquisite lover and, later, first mate of her ship.”

“Edwina Moorcock was the reigning champion of the Upper Billing End Amateur Gardening Show, and had been for over twenty years running, thank you very much! She was nearly knocked off her perch by young Alisa Birch, fresh as the first day of Spring, until Ms. Birch’s rose beds were found torn apart by some sort of animal, a roving pack of dogs, perhaps. Edwina made a show of consoling the young woman, but has never been able to explain what she was doing out so late on the night the roses were destroyed.”

“Amul Night Rate, cybernetic boy whore. His flesh sheath is the most pliable around and contains powerful neuro-inhibitors that leave his clients simpering and docile, perfect for emptying their cred accounts.”

Worlds of Adventure v0.2 is here!

We’re proud to announce the second iteration of this ongoing project. If you’re not familiar with the initial Release of Worlds of Adventure, we’re looking to build on the strengths and themes of Dungeon World with a holistic, take-it-as-is ruleset that emphasises functionality and flexibility.

For those familiar with the v0.1 ruleset, here’s a list of some of the broad-strokes changes:

– Updates to some overall mechanics, particularly for Bonds and the Adventure Moves.

– Some small tweaks to items and item prices.

– Updates to each of the classes, some small, some big.

– The Cleric has been totally reworked!

– Spellcasting (for the Cleric and the Wizard) has also been reworked, and there are some extra premade spells and invocations.

Please send us your comments and suggestions. You can contact me, Yochai Gal, and/or the other owners/moderators of this community whom I can’t seem to +tag right now.

Quick (ish) question:

I’ve been reading over Apocalypse World (i’m running it for the first time and having a blast!) and I can’t find anywhere where the book specifies something that came up in our first session. Can special (sex) moves be used on NPC’s or is that just for PC’s?

Thanks for all of your help!
