Is there a Black Hack derived or similar feeling “Gamma World” hack? Something much lighter than Mutant Crawl Classics.

Several for Savage Worlds as well. Petal Hack might work in a pinch too.

Niiiiiice. Thanks!

Graham Meinert Savage Worlds isn’t very rules lite or OSR-0ish. The thing I like about Black Hack is that it is straight forward and pretty light on rules. I’ve gamed since the early 80s as a kid but I like the lighter, sandbox games these days (a lot of PbtA, some FATE, Cthulhu Dark, etc).

Could Dungeon Planet do Gamma World with judicious playbook selections?

For a different flavor of post-apocalyptic vomit, you could try Mike Evans Into the Odd spin-off Death is the New Pink. I would give it two thumbs up but one of them was eaten by a mutant… and the other one is more of a tentacle now.

Jim Jones I’ve bought a print copy from Lulu now. Unfortunately, no print + pdf combo was available.

On Savage Worlds – while it does operate without classes, I’d suggest that it is more akin to OSR games than PbtA games are. It is more driven by challenges than narrative. Character death, while a rarer event than in 1st Ed, AD&D, DCC or LotFP is more likely than the vast majority of Apocalypse Engine games.
Similarly while not the first thought for rules light, its mechanics are far lighter than many OSR systems. To-Hit is 4+ melee is simply highest roll. Pretty much covers skills too.
It’s, I suspect, a matter of we tend to think of certain titles and players as part of whatever category rather than examine the thing.
All that said, Death is the New Pink is an excellent suggestion.

I should confess that I feel as fondly for Savage Worlds as I do for GURPS, which is not at all. 🙂

Albert Billings, SW may not be a flavor you care for – that’s a fair enough criticism. In my own admission, I agree with you completely on GURPS but am a fan of Champions (but never saw the point of broadening the system to Hero).

Two that I’ll recommend are Mutant Futures and Other Dust. Both give you a good Gamma World feel. Mutant Futures is closer in tone to 1st ed Gamma World while Other Dust is built on Stars Without Number and has all Stars’ toolkit goodness..
Mutant Futures has a free no-art version.
