Hi there!

Hi there!

Hi there! I’ve recently been considering running a gothic horror game using the Cypher System. (The setting and tone would be along the lines of the golden age of Hammer films.) Has anyone else done this, and if so, what kinds of cyphers, artifacts, assets, etc. did you use?

  1. Hi Matt Martinez, I’ve run a couple of games with the Cypher System, but never a horror game.

Have you been looking at the Horror chapter in the Cypher System Corebook? It has some artifact examples.

Other than that, I’d check out the Numenera glimmer, In Strange Aeons Lovecraftian horror. There may be some stuff that is useful in the Strange books–especially the Ruk world that has biomechanical tech.

There are other books that may be able to be re-themed for your use.

    I hope that helps. 🙂

  3. steven watkins I’ve looked at the Cypher System Rulebook, but their suggestions don’t really seem to have the same kind of tone I’m looking for. In fact, I’d say it’s much more in line with Lovecraftian horror than gothic supernatural horror.

The kinds of things I’ve thought up are cyphers like wooden stakes and flasks of holy water, artifacts such as holy symbols, and assets like silver bullets/crossbow bolts. (Or would special ammunition still be considered a cypher?)

  5. Matt Martinez Sorry, but I haven’t run across any Cypher System horror details like you are looking for.

I’ve run it a couple of times, and played in a dozen one-shots or so. I’m a big fan of the system.

I like your ideas of the items you mentioned.

I think the ammo (silver bullets/crossbow bolts) and flasks of holy water would be cyphers, as they are consumable.

The wooden stakes and holy symbols would be more permanent, so they’d make good artifacts. They should still be depleted on a die roll of a 1 (on a d6 or some die).

I’d think that a lot of the “weird” stuff from the Numenera could be used as “horror” stuff with the right environments. It wouldn’t be too hard to re-skin it.

    Good luck!
