Crosspost with the Tavern.

Crosspost with the Tavern.

Advice request. I’m running my first real session of Dungeon World tomorrow (I ran a one-shot once). This game is via Roll20. I have a hex map prepared for an area. Should I just show the entire map and let them plot their course, or should I use fog of war and reveal as they go? The characters have never been in this region before. Thx for any advice!

  1. If they buy a map in game, show the whole map. I would only put names of cities and land areas, don’t have your monster camp or anything like that on it. And of course, fill in the blanks as you go between towns.

If they don’t buy a map, I’d leave the fog of war.

  3. I would consider a couple of things.

    1) ask the players which they prefer; if you don’t have any compelling reason yourself – which is what it sounds like. Remind them (if necessary – players coming from more trad F20 games may need it) that even though they as players can see the whole map, their characters don’t have any clue.

    2) if they decide they can see the whole map, I would ask the players to place and describe one thing/place/person/location that their character really wants to go to, and ask them why. Then ask them to do the same, but it’s a thing their character has always been afraid of, and ask them why.

  5. I should have heeded the advice to completely show the map. But, I learned how I was not using the rules as intended. Did I suck less? No. Did I suck completely? No. So onward and upward.
