I need some feedback on a move I am working on. I’m not sure how to make it more interesting. Let me know if you guys have any ideas.

Portal

You can attune yourself to an area within a friendly city or large settlement in order to create a portal used to travel back there. When you attempt to create a portal to travel back to an attuned location, spend 1 Mana per person you wish to pass through and roll+INT. On a 10+ you create a stable portal that will remain open long enough for you and a number of other creatures equal to the mana spent to pass through. On a 7-9, choose one:

• The portal opens in the settlement, but not in the location you wanted it to.

• The portal is resilient and will stay open longer than you want it to.

• The portal will take longer than you expected to open.

  1. You are using mana i see. I would make this a magic item with charges. Or maybe a scroll that disintegrates afterwards. Thats just me…

    I like your move overall

  3. I like it as a move you roll not when you make it but when you try to use it. ( Which I think is your intent. ) Since this essentially creates respawn/save points, I would make it real dangerous. I’m thinking “open too long” means something frim another dimension could slip through, possibly in addition to enemies following you from the source location.

  5. I like the overall feel of the Move. However…

The first option only represents a difficult choice when you’d like to create a stable portal whether it lasts a few moments or a real long time.

The second option is just the contrary. It only represents a difficult choice when you want to use your portal to escape from a danger or dangerous place.

Thus, I would phrase the move a bit differently.

On a 10+ you create a stable portal according to your needs.

    On a 7-9, choose one:

    • The portal will take longer than you expected to open.

    • The portal doesn’t leads to the destination of your choice.

    • The portal doesn’t last according to your liking.

    My 2 cents.

  7. Ray Otus it is for a spell casting class I am making! Bastien Wauthoz I see what you mean. The portal would never be permanent and was meant to imply it only lasts for as long as it takes the number of people you designate with the amount of mana you spend to go through. The option that says it closes once you step through was meant to imply the mage has to wait until everyone else is through before they can enter, opening them up to danger if they are trying to flee. I felt it was a little weak and may use something like Chris Shorb suggested, like “The portal appears in the settlement, but not where you thought it would” as an option instead. The stays open longer option was to suggest to the GM that something follows them through, like an enemy that was chasing them or a monster that was drawn to the portal’s magic. The taking longer option is self explanatory, since thats a golden opportunity to send a danger at them while the mage is opening the portal.

I like all the input from you guys, and the fact that most of you seem to like it gives me the drive I need to keep it going! Thanks a lot!

  11. Scott Selvidge I understand your point.

Then you should clearly state that the portal only last for as long as it takes the number of people you designate with the amount of mana you spend to go through

  13. Robert Doe My friend and I are actually working on a conversion for all the spell casters to use Mana. What exactly is giving you trouble? You can send me a private message if that’s any easier.

  15. Well i wanted to maintain the playbook as much as i could without changing it.

My first feat was to deside how i wanted spell casting to work. Roll to cast (current as of RAW), Or cast without rolling and roll to regain mana (my prefered method as it fits the video gamey-ness feel of mana use).

Then i needed to set values for mana pools at each level. Whether that was a formula or a constant i didnt know. I decided to base it off of level.

Finally i needed mana requirements for each spell. I decided to set spell mana costs equal to spell level.

This method works, but feels clunky as it stands.

  17. Robert Doe you sound like you are on the right track. Once I finish the class and make a few more that use Mana I plan to put them and a description of the mana system together in a pdf. Probably on drivethru rpg. It will also include adapting existing classes to the mana system.
