  1. AD&D 2nd edition when I was 12. I found the AD&D First Quest boxed set at KB Toys for $6, and I ran my neighborhood friends through the included modules.

The first game that I played as opposed to running would be about 6-8 months later with Dragon Storm, which was a CCG RPG that was new at the time.

  3. AD&D when I was probably 10 or 11 at the local hobby shop. The shop owner’s kids let me play (tolerated me playing) a session with them, probably because the owner knew my dad.

  5. I was 11. It was Red Box, Mentzer, Dungeons and Dragons. Before that I watched a group of older kids play Advanced Dungeons and Dragons and looked through the books, but I wasn’t allowed to play.

Then I moved to a different state and met some new friends. While camping in a camper in their front yard, we were bored and raided the drawers looking for something to do. We found some six sided dice, graph paper, and pencils. I told these new friends about the games of D&D that I used to watch and we decided to “play”.

So if I wanted to be absolutely accurate, the first RPG I ever played was my own half remembered d6 hack of AD&D. My parents bought me Mentzer’s D&D Red Box for my birthday that year. A year later, I picked up Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness and a group of kids from school and I started playing every game we could get our hands on.

  7. Around 1997, when I was 12 or so. After seeing Dexter’s Lab episode “D&DD” (dexterslab.wikia.com – D & DD) I got hooked in. Surprisingly, I knew what RPGs were before that (probably from computer games), but that episode pushed me to try it at the tabletop.

I didn’t have access to any RPGs so I made my own. All the rules were written on a folder that doubled as GM screen. The rules didn’t really make sense (I remember random chargen, one of the races was a genie), but I had fun playing with my younger cousin and his friend. We had drawn some maps, rolled some dice and in the end, the PCs were banished from a village.

I wish I still had this folder. Might need to go dig in my parents’ attic next time I will am there.

The first proper RPG was the old WOD (I think there were both Vampires and Magi in the campaign, I played a vampire) a year or so later, but I didn’t like it much, so I started experimenting with different systems I found online (mainly GURPS and FUDGE). The rest is history.

  9. First “official” RPG was when I was 20 and in college it was A d20 Star Wars system, but I was a “child LARPer.” I made up games (some with complicated rules and economics) that my friends and I would play outside of school or in that wonderful 15 minutes of recess.

  11. OD&D. It was 1977 and it felt like I was a 9 year old that had found the promised land.  My best friend told me his father went to some convention in Lake Geneva and he would run a game for us if I slept over.  I’ll never forget that first time playing.
