So, I started listening to the podcasts (really dig them, btw), which brought me to the G+ community, which got me back into wanting to game – or rather, seeing gaming as something that I might be able to fit into my life again. I joined a pbp. Yay! But I’d like to try one of meetups/hangouts.

I’m not a super social media person or particularly tech savvy – how does one go about getting into a game, and then how do you do the hangouts thing?

By the former, I mean that it always seems like things are booked on Meetup by the time I find out that they are happening. Can I approach this better?

By the latter, I mean literally. I used my computer as a word processor, a place to put my music and gaming .pdfs, to check my work email, and to watch Netflix or play very old games from Steam. I’ve no clue how to actually Hangout via video…. I thought Hangouts was like AIM but for Gmail. Is it easier than I’m making it on my head?

FWIW, Jason Cordova, I am relatively comfortable running games and wouldn’t mind doing so once I feel a little more grounded with playing online and playing story games in general.

  1. Playtests tend to be easier to sign up for, with fewer attendees. Trust me, they’re still lot of fun and you may get a chance to interact with the author of the game, so isn’t that a cool bonus?

All signups are managed through the Meetup app/site now. Look for the Gauntlet Houston group. (I think)

  3. Go ahead and join the wait lists, people do drop ocasionaly, also look at couple months out. We have fairly regular games. if you see a regular Monday game followed by empty mondays, they will probably be filled with events before the current games finnish

  5. Here’s the Meetup page for the Gauntlet: https://www.meetup.com/Gauntlet-Hangouts/

You can join the group, and keep an eye open for new events to get a jump on signing up (some games are more popular and fill up faster), or look through the calendar for open slots.

For the actual game, most are done on Hangouts, which has a group video call feature. Generally, a link to the call will be shared with the people signed up for the game (either in the Meetup event comments or some other way). You can just open the link and you’ll be able to join the call. It’s really easy.

For dice and stuff, some people use the Dicestream app that integrates with Hangouts, others use Roll20, and there are probably a dozen other ways as well.

  7. Yeah, just join the Meetup and sign-up for something. The waitlists tend to thin out as the event date gets closer. If you’re going to be in a game I run, I don’t mind helping get your tech set-up beforehand (do a test Hangouts call, show you the dice plugins, etc.).

  9. Christopher Meid Agreed on Playtest. It’s nowhere near as popular as the other events, but I have no idea why. It’s some of the most interesting gaming I am personally involved in, and you get to have a real impact on how a game shapes up.
