Was it an episode of The Gauntlet where a host talked about how early D&D didn’t have a thief nor rogue and so sneaking and disarming traps was something all characters did?

Am I imagining that?

  1. You are imagining that, haha. Only somewhat related, but that’s one of the things I love about DW. Any character can open locks, disarm traps, bend bars/lift gates, call shots, etc., but it’s just a little riskier if it’s not a class move. The characters for whom those are class moves aren’t as exposed to GM moves.

  3. It may not have been the Gauntlet but it is true. Original D&D had no Thief class, though one came along quickly in the first supplement (Greyhawk).  Long and bitter battles rage in the OSR over the inclusion of the Thief.

  5. Interesting. Thank you.

I’ve been listening to Gauntlet and DSR and I think I got my podcasts mixed up.

That said, great work, Team Gauntlet! I’m enjoying the hell out of your show.

  7. It is an interesting question in my mind. Does making the thief skills rolls take away the player-skill in stealth and/or disarming traps? Does making it a roll take away the importance of describing how one disarms a trap and take away the DM’s thoughts on exactly how the trap works?

Maybe it was Harley Stroh who talked about this?
