#rpgaday Day 3: First one I purchased complete was probably Star Frontiers.  I can’t remember if I ever actually played a game of it!  The first one I actually bought the books and modules for was 1978 Advanced D&D (is that 2nd ed?).  My Aunt&Uncle got me the Players Handbook for my birthday in 1981 with the inscription, “We hope you have many hours of enjoyment with this (although it looks pretty weird to us)”.

  1. My first was Star Frontiers also, in ’84. My first group had abandoned dnd before I joined, so my next games bought were RuneQuest and StormBringer. Don’t regret that one bit.

  3. We played Star Frontiers when we got bored with Gamma World. Since I’m a hoarder I still have it except for the box. Those things used to just crush flat in a week.

  5. All my games from that time were victims of the great DND panic. I am buyimg them on e bay and where I can. Star Frontiers was the first re buy. Couple of good fanzines and web sites still supporting it.

  7. Meanwhile, I was playing everything but dnd. Man, lots of great games from then… Chivalry&Sorcery, Wild West, Flashing Blades, Wooden Ships & Iron Men, Twilight 2000, RuneQuest, RoleMaster…

  9. Oh, the halcyon days of roleplaying! If only we could game like we did back in 1984!

Jesus Christ…I was gaming back then, too (Marvel Super Heroes was my first jam), but there have been so many developments in game mechanics and theory in the last 30 years. I’ve tried to go back and play some of those older games and, trust me, most haven’t aged well. Some of them are downright unplayable.

Nostalgia is the cancer of our hobby. Stop being filled with cancer!
