The first one I actually bought the books and modules for was 1978 Advanced D&D (is that 2nd ed?). My Aunt&Uncle got me the Players Handbook for my birthday in 1981 with the inscription, “We hope you have many hours of enjoyment with this (although it looks pretty weird to us)”.
