Hey all,  does anyone live in the Cypress-Fairfield area? I’m going to be moving there in about 6 months and I’m curious if there are any comic/gaming stores in that area. Especially interested in those with a good boardgame selection.

  1. I’ll tell you what: I love a lot about the gaming scene in Houston (although, granted, I had to create my own scene). The one thing I do not love: lack of good comic/gaming stores. 8th Dimension’s heart is in the right place, but it’s still got a long way to go. Nan’s has a decent selection, but the people who work there are pretty surly, and the place is kind of a mess. Now, if someone wanted to open a Dragon’s Lair franchise in Houston, that would be freaking incredible.

  3. Right on. Thanks Brian Rodriguez. I wonder if the area would support one?  I’ve been thinking about breaking into the Boardgame cafe business which would include a section for retail. I don’t know if it would be the right venue for comics but definitely for RPGs and other games.

  5. I agree Jason Cordova. I think that it’s very difficult to exist as a FLGS in a sprawling city like Houston. Most people would rather save a few bucks and order from Amazon. The reason a business model like Snakes and Lattes in Toronto spikes my interest is because it gives people an incentive to come in.

  7. Greg Feeney There is a place that just opened a few weeks ago (Neal’s Bar?). I’d be curious to know how they’re doing. I think their emphasis is comics, but it’s the same idea:  nerd stuff + beer = profit.

  9. Jason Cordova I’ve heard about it. Will probably scope it out soon. I think it’s definitely more geek culture based than actual gaming.

  11. very interesting thread!

I’ve often felt the same way re:stores in Houston. I haven’t had a chance to trek out to 8th, but I agree about Nan’s.

never been to Dragon’s Lair, will have to check it out next time I head to Austin. But in the mean time,Jason Cordova, I am curious what makes it stand out from others in Houston?

I’ve heard Neil’s Bar is pretty much a bar with a nerd/geek theme, and that sounds cool, but not like a lot of gaming could happen there (again, just what I’ve heard). Now, the gaming/brewery kickstarter (the name escapes me…wizards?) that was posted a while back definitely looks promising 🙂

  13. Oh right, I owe a review!

Neil’s is definitely geeky, but with more a media focus. Need flicks are playing on the big screen TVs, there’s an M64 with either Mario Kart or Goldeneye playing, and racks full of comics.

The outdoor has a guy with a trailer usually grilling, and has about 2 tables. You could prob get a decent game going, but distractions abound between getting hit up for cash or the food sales (cash only for food btw).

Inside has decent game space, as a rousing game of cards against humanity ensued during my visit. However the loud music & patron noise would make story gaming difficult.

Still, overall I’d say it’s a pretty cool little place & worth a trip.

  15. Angel Viator Smith Dragon’s Lair is just a terrific community space for gaming. They have numerous tables and private rooms (it used to be a gym). In terms of merchandise, they carry a terrific selection of games and comics. They even have a decent selection of roleplaying games, which is something that tends to get passed over by other game/comic shops. There are more subtle things I like about it, too. For one thing, there is a lot of diversity in the staff. It is also well-managed and swarming with customers. The stereotypical FLGS – the disorganized nerd boys’ club – has its charms, I suppose, but at the end of the day, I just want a good selection and an environment that doesn’t make me feel uncomfortable.

  17. One more thing: I think 8th Dimension has some of those core characteristics (diverse staff, good selection, well-run), but just in miniature. If they could grow it out like D-Lair, it would be terrific and I would be there all the time.

  19. I did overhear during Free RPG Day that 8D is expanding into the adjacent storefront, and that the gamesroom will also expand along with it. Adding an additional table I believe.
