Last night I had the distinct pleasure of running Dawg the RPG for Tyler Lominack, Patrick Knowles, Gerrit Reininghaus, and Paul Edson as part of Gauntlet City Limits. I want to give each of them a Dream for their wonderful play.
The game, for me, was bittersweet throughout. I grew up with dogs in my life since I was very little. I have had small dogs (Tiny the chihuhua), medium-sized dogs (Jubei the Aussie Shep mix), even big dogs (Sarge the German Shepherd). I’m a dog person, happily so. When my son was six months old and covered with hives and we were told that yes, one hundred percent he is allergic to pet dander, especially dogs, we had to find new homes for Foo-Bear and Jubei, which we did. And for the last eleven years, I haven’t had a dog in my life on a consistent basis (we have family and friends with dogs, and I love on them when I can sneak it in).
But last night, I had a pack of wonderful dogs to play with, and it was AWESOME! From the moment Tyler introduced Beau, the refined and spoiled breeding dog with a manservant he called Mr. Walkies, I knew I was in for a treat. Patrick’s big galoot Sionn and his penchant to become a “mud monster” was endearing and reminded me of how delightful big, happy dogs could be. Paul’s thoughtful and introspective play of Nomad was such a solid through-line for the interactions between everyone, and Paul used this almost John Wayne accent from time to time that I really liked. Gerrit’s dachshund Sophie was super cute, and Gerrit did the puppy-dog eyes really, really well.
Dreams to you, guys, thank you all so much. I bragged about you to my wife as we lay in bed, shared with her all the little moments and the interesting layer of melancholy for these four dogs who found themselves in the LaFreniere Humane Society in downtown Gauntlet City. The session ended with one kennel door opening, I cannot wait to see what happens next week!
