  1. It was a special session to me, indeed.

I wasn’t convinced but just openly curious about playing dogs before. I’m not a dog person (but have lived with dogs happily) and had my doubts about anthropocentric stories around animals some might have many very personal stories around it. There is a reason that in many Gauntlet Hangouts violence against animals is excluded as potential content at the beginning by one or several players. And that this is mostly not directed towards giant spiders or bears (monsters!) or cows and chicken (meat!) but about those animals considered as pets or pet like is obvious to me.

So how would playing a dog work? Would we go for Disney movie or dare to lean towards Watership Down?

It turned out differently altogether. First of all, the session which was only two hours long and contained character creation and learning a bit about the mechanics, was about carefully getting to know each other as (dog) players.

We gave each other (and Rich was of great help with that) a quite characteristic dog personality which was both typical anthropocentric dog like and typical roleplaying characters differentiation.

It worked really well since we understood quickly where we wanted to go with our ideas and then Rich gave each of us a chance to find our way into the adventure (caught in a shelter) and within a few minutes sharpening our understanding of our characters and giving it a tragic twist.

Now I don’t feel like a dog dog for the upcoming second session but I feel like Sophie, the dachshund, being out there with her new friends Sionn, Beau and Nomad and totally confident that they can help her to find her way back to Master. What more do I want from a game of dawgs?
