Here’s a link to episode 2 of Monsterhearts: Mercy Falls. I’m going to put the timecodes and annotations below for folks who are listening from their podcatcher app. As a reminder, if you’re a $2+ Patron of the Gauntlet, you get access to all eleven episodes of this series much faster (on the Patreon feed, they’re on episode 7, and will have all eleven episodes by early next week).

In this scene, I show a really good pacing technique, which is to cut away from a scene after a roll has taken place. If a scene has been going for a few minutes and you have other players waiting for their scene, a die roll is great excuse to jump away. In addition to letting you move the spotlight around, it also gives the session a slightly more cinematic feel.
A quick reminder that our shrine contest continues through May 31st. If you wish to participate, here are the details:

-You agree to let us publish your shrine contest entry in a special issue of Codex.

Asylum City
This is a Dungeon World starter written by myself but largely inspired by the Bellet Osc sessions I ran last year and earlier this year. The main themes of the starter are madness and ancient mystery. It’s one part Alice in Wonderland, one part Dark Souls, and features terrific illustrations by Nery Mejicano.
Rituals
Rituals is a Powered by the Apocalypse mini game and supplement by Oli Jeffery about living with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. It can be played by itself or added to an existing PbtA game, and it is extremely thoughtful and clever (and a little frustrating and sad, too). It features some really nice art by Sean Poppe.
The Madness of Cú Chulainn
Get ready to warp spasm! This is a short, two-player story game by Tom McGrenery that focuses on the Celtic mythological figure Cú Chulainn. One player takes on the role of the Daughters of Calatin and the other takes on the role of the friends and family of Cú Chulainn in the Kingdom of Ulster, each vying to determine Cú Chulainn’s ultimate fate. It features a beautiful and dramatic illustration by Claudia Cangini (which is also the cover of this month’s issue).
The Madness of Legends
This short piece, also by Tom, translates the “madness” of several mythological heroes into popular Powered by the Apocalypse systems, such as Monsterhearts and Dungeon World. It is, to quote Tom, “a bit of frippery,” but I thought it was a really fun and inventive bit of frippery, so in it went!
My Female Hysteria
My Female Hysteria is a scenario for Cheat Your Own Adventure written by Fred Bednarski. It’s about the women patients in Surrey County Asylum in 1844. You play a woman diagnosed with “female hysteria” on account of her tendency to “cause trouble.” Will you be able to prove to the doctors you are well enough to return to your normal life? Failing that, will you be able to somehow escape? Play to find out! This piece features a gorgeous illustration by Claudia Cangini (see below).
Three Dozen Great Old Ones
This month’s miscellany is about new mythos monsters and features a metal as fuck illustration by Vandel J. Arden. The entries this month are scary and imaginative, and in terms of heft, this is the closest the miscellany has come to being a full article.
The layout on Codex – Madness was done by Oli Jeffery. Editing duties were handled by myself and David LaFreniere.
To get Codex – Madness make a $4 pledge on the Gauntlet Patreon by May 31st!
Have you joined the Gauntlet Hangouts G+ Community? If not, you definitely should. That is where we announce all the new games going up on our calendar, and today and tomorrow we’re putting up all sorts of stuff for May, June and July.

Episode 98 of The Gauntlet Podcast is here! In this one, Richard Rogers, Lowell Francis and myself talk about some of the games we played in April. There is a lot of really interesting discussion here that kind of boils down to what each of us fundamentally wants out of a roleplaying game.
Speaking for myself, I find that lately I have no time for dogmatic views on roleplaying games (and I say this knowing I am someone who has occasionally held dogmatic views in the past). I’m enjoying games the way I want to enjoy them, and for me that means embracing traditional settings, themes and aesthetics, and re-contextualizing them for more indie-style play. You can hear Lowell and I really embracing that approach this episode, and I think it’s a sign of things to come.
Thanks to Paul Edson for the terrific edit this week.

To celebrate international tabletop day we’ve put together this Quickstart for The Veil: Cascade. A supplement Kickstarting in May that will have more playbooks, what we’re calling “plugins” for playbooks that work similar to compendium classes. There’s going to be a piece inside by a PhD student breaking down the genre to help people play, more advice, and my personal favorite, a setting already put together with a adventure starter baked in. And loads more!
Please share this free Quickstart for it with anyone you can think of that might enjoy it and send us some feedback if you’ve played it! Enjoy, and think of us when the Kickstarter launches soon!
To celebrate 200 Patrons, we’re re-launching Pocket-Sized Play!
The first series is Monsterhearts: Mercy Falls. The participants are myself, Fraser Simons, Yoshi Creelman, Kevin Lovecraft and Phillip Wessels.
Monsterhearts: Mercy Falls is eleven total episodes, each around 30 minutes in length. We’re going to release one episode per day on the Patreon feed. For non-Patrons, the episodes will be released weekly through the Pocket-Sized Play podcast stream and our website (the first one is linked below).
Big thanks go to Fraser, who not only had the idea for this PSP relaunch, but who also edited the original Hangouts sessions from which the audio is taken.
Our main goal here is to not only entertain you, but to give you a glimpse into the Gauntlet’s play culture. We hope you find a lot in these sessions you can use in your own games.
Enjoy!
(And thanks to everyone who helped us hit our 200 Patron milestone!)
