I’ve just heard that Stewart Wieck has passed away.

I’ve just heard that Stewart Wieck has passed away.

I’ve just heard that Stewart Wieck has passed away. Most people, of course, will remember Stewart as the legendary game designer and co-founder of White Wolf. But in the Gauntlet, we also know Stewart as a fixture of the Houston gaming scene. Stewart was one of the original 25 members of the Gauntlet G+ group, back when it was just a way of organizing local D&D games. He was an early and passionate supporter of the Gauntlet Podcast, and has been its sponsor from the first minutes we launched our Patreon. When he purchased Asgard Games in Houston, he made sure we had a table for our f2f games, and he went out of his way to stock indie games he had heard about on our shows.

I have always been extremely flattered and humbled by the fact that Stewart was a fan of what we do here in the Gauntlet, and that much of his late-career support of indie RPG designers has been because of his association with us. Because of our relationship with his company, Nocturnal, I was aware of many of the awesome things he had in the pipeline, and now I’m sitting here extremely saddened that this good man, this visionary man, was taken from us so soon.

Tom McGrenery and I present the final episode of Monster of the Week: The Lombardi School!

This has been a really fun AP to put together. Tom was a great player and a fantastic editor. From the outset, we were determined to present something entirely different from the gonzo heroics that are typical of Monster of the Week. I think we were successful in that regard, and a lot of it comes down to the very clever deployment of musical cues and sound effects, but also the basic spirit of collaboration that existed between us.

Thanks again to Tom, and thanks to everyone who gave us constructive feedback throughout. You will be able to hear Tom and I together again on our new podcast, Fear of a Black Dragon!

Artist recommendations needed for Codex

We have a piece in Codex – Crystal that is a riff on video games like Final Fantasy (and other JRPGs). I need recommendations for someone who can do manga or Japanese-influenced art like you might find on a cover for such a game. You can link me in the comments or drop me a line at gauntletpodcast@gmail.com.

Thanks!

I was reminded about Clink on the newest episode of The Gauntlet Podcast because David Schirduan mentioned it during our interview segment. Having checked out the KS, I really like what I have seen so far! I’m a big fan of what we here at the Gauntlet call “emergent story,” meaning rather than come to the table with a bunch of backstory and setting ideas, you instead discover all that stuff in the middle of play via scenes that get triggered by specific mechanics. I think that leads to much more satisfying play, and the coin-flipping system here seems both simple and deep, and really, really fresh.

Other highlights for me: the book is being laid out by Evan Rowland and the illustrations are by Per Folmer (whose work has appeared in several issues of Codex). Sigil Stone (Ben Dutter’s imprint) is handling publishing duties.

All in all, a great looking package with two easy pledge levels: $10 PDF or $20 softcover.
