Last night we had a terrific Anthology session. We played the game Kingdom to tell the story of the Blue Brotherhood, a legendary mercenary company laying siege to a city overrun by the undead.

I am enjoying where this Anthology project is headed. As I predicted weeks ago, it is turning out to be a great success. It is starting to creep into some of our other game nights (on Wednesday, for example, we played Microscope to explore the history of the Dagger Isles) and we’re developing some really fantastic hooks for future sessions. Now I just have to update the folder!

There were two moments from last night I want to memorialize here: Bilesh, the poseur, Hot Topic necromancer (a secondary character I enjoyed playing almost as much as my main character) and the phrase “I snatch a piece of bacon out of a baby halfling’s mouth!”

That is all.

Thanks to Rob Ferguson Derek Grimm Scott Owen (who I can’t tag for some reason) and Gary Wilson !

We had our fifth session of Dungeon World: Temple of Elemental Evil tonight and it was a blast!

We had our fifth session of Dungeon World: Temple of Elemental Evil tonight and it was a blast! We STILL haven’t gotten to the moat house, but it hardly matters. Tonight was definitely one of the most thrilling sessions of DW I’ve played. There were so many tense moments! The party managed to scrape by and FINALLY made their way back to the village of Hommlett. And now it’s time for Carouse! Good times.

Thanks to Ferrell Riley Sean Smith Derek Grimm and Eddy Gonzalez !

Honestly, by the third session, I was growing a little bored with this game, mostly because I didn’t feel like I had enough to do as the GM (the players make virtually every decision in this one). But last night we did something radical and switched up not only GMs, but player characters as well. It definitely revitalized things for me and I had a great time.

We also had margaritas, Corona, and a bad-ass Mexican chili. That may have contributed a bit to the fun factor. Thanks to Rob Ferguson Daniel Lewis Ferrell Riley and Daniel Fowler for a great session!

Last night, Derek Grimm Rob Ferguson and myself continued our exploration of the Anthology world. We used Kingdom to explore the realm of the gods. The details from this session will be added to the Anthology folder.

As for Kingdom, it’s a pretty neat system. It worked well for our purposes. I think it would positively sing when telling a story smaller in scope. It, along with its companion game, Microscope, are very well thought-out and lots of fun. I can’t wait to get both of them to the table again.

For anyone paying attention, I have been running a weekly game of Dungeon World on Roll20 (via Hangouts).

For anyone paying attention, I have been running a weekly game of Dungeon World on Roll20 (via Hangouts). It is my conversion of 1st ed. Temple of Elemental Evil. We have had four sessions so far, which have encompassed my own “module,” T0: Remnants of Elemental Evil. Starting next week we head into my conversion of T1: The Village of Hommlett.

This will be pretty interesting. For starters, the 1st ed. ToEE is fucking awful. I should get some sort of prize for reading 100+ pages of this dreck. We owe Gary Gygax for a lot, but succinct, elegant prose is not one of those things. There is also the fact that old school game design meant calling out every damn detail of every damn location. It is enough to put you to sleep (and, in fact, I have nodded off more than once throughout this process). When it is all said and done, my Dungeon World conversion (minus my T0) will be less than 10 pages.

All that said, we’re having great fun. The players are doing a terrific job (Derek Grimm Ferrell Riley Eddy Gonzalez Sean Smith ). Ferrell has even created a set of campaign notes, which will be fun to reference later. I can’t wait to see how things go once we start ToEE proper next week!

A few snaps from last night’s Wednesday One-Shots. We played Lady Blackbird and Carolina Death Crawl. Carolina Death Crawl was as blood-curdling as ever. I wasn’t at the Lady Blackbird table, but despite the fact there was no impromptu erotic hand massage (like that one time) I gather it was plenty of fun.

This will be a special session of the Final Girl, in which we will be playing the monsters roaming around an abandoned dwarven keep, and the killer is an adventuring party. The story will be part of the Anthology series.

Food will be provided. BYOB.

Here is our Anthology folder. Feel free to add new questions to the Questions & Mysteries. The Timeline – High Dale document is our product from Friday’s session of Microscope. There are LOTS of gaps. The purpose of this ongoing project is to fill them in.

Worth pointing out: The setting (so far) is a somewhat generic D&D-style fantasy world. And that’s ok. We’re going to use this project to twist those tropes around and/or explore parts of the standard fantasy world that don’t get much attention.

The next session is this Friday, during which we will take a look at the Blue Brotherhood (a mercenary company mentioned in the timeline), using the Kingdoms RPG.
