Does anyone have any thoughts on the upcoming 5th edition? I will be the first to admit the artwork on the new books is pretty great (although, if we’re being honest, that’s table stakes for WotC).

I think it’s interesting they are doing organized-play stuff. I wonder if it will attract the same sorts of people that Pathfinder Society does? Because, if so, they can forget about a mainstream breakthrough – normal people don’t want to vacation on that island of misfit toys. I’m also curious about the rules. I stopped keeping-up after it occurred to me Dungeon World had this shit figured out already.

For Story Game Sunday, we played Classroom Deathmatch (Society of Dreamers was on the calendar, but we had the wrong number of people for that one).

I will start-off by saying we had a lot of fun. There were many good scenes, and we had some good laughs, but this game is problematic. First, the mechanics are garbage. The last time we played a game with such utterly disposable rules was probably Cosmic Patrol. The conflict resolution system is essentially meaningless. You roll a bunch of dice, are statistically likely to succeed almost every time, but it doesn’t matter, because your fate is entirely in the hands of your ‘best friend’ or your ‘rival,’ roles which change so quickly, they mean nothing. It has a hand-wavey, arbitrary feel.

Another issue is the game is kind of a slog. You have to plow through 49 characters to get to the end, and there is a lot of weird bookkeeping (which makes no sense at all, given the hand-wavey mechanics mentioned above). Do I really need to know that my gun has 2, 20-bullet clips left, or that I have 1D4 flash grenades? There is also this impenetrable skill system based on elements (Fire, Air, etc.). Good luck remembering what kind of actions each of the elements pertains to, since there are about ten for each of the five elements.

Another big issue with this game is the cast of characters. There are 50 of them, and most have stats and traits that are amusing, if a bit too heavy on the Japanese youth culture stereotypes. Some of them, however, are very objectionable and cross that line between good, campy fun and skin-crawlingly icky. One character, for example, has ‘molestation’ listed as a hobby. Another character is a victim of domestic violence and has the special technique ‘Can take a punch.’ Another character is all about incest. It’s a bit gross, but this game came from the geniuses who gave us the game Panty Explosion, so I’m not sure why I’m so surprised.

Like I said, we had a good time with it, but the chances of us playing this again are none. A game like the Final Girl would actually do this setting with much better payoff.

Thanks to Daniel Lewis for running it, and to Rob Ferguson Russell Benner Steve Mains and Ferrell Riley  for coming out!

The Gauntlet: Bringing people together in a spirit of fellowship, camaraderie, and devil-worship.

Once there was a Gauntlet….

Once there was a Gauntlet….

Once there was a Gauntlet….

and she loved a little boy.

And everyday the boy would come

and he would gather her leaves

and make them into crowns

and play king of the forest.

He would climb up her trunk

and swing from her branches

and eat apples.

And they would play hide-and-go-seek.

And when he was tired,

he would sleep in her shade.

And the boy loved the Gauntlet….

very much.

And the Gauntlet was happy.

But time went by.

And the boy grew older.

And the Gauntlet was often alone.

Then one day the boy came to the Gauntlet

and the Gauntlet said, “Come, Boy, come and

climb up my trunk and swing from my

branches and eat apples and play in my

shade and be happy.”

“I am too big to climb and play” said

the boy.

“I want to buy things and have fun.

I want some money.”

“I’m sorry,” said the Gauntlet, “but I

have no money.

I have only leaves and apples.

Take my apples, Boy, and sell them in

the city. Then you will have money and

you will be happy.”

And so the boy climbed up the

Gauntlet and gathered her apples

and carried them away.

And the Gauntlet was happy.

But the boy stayed away for a long time….

and the Gauntlet was sad.

And then one day the boy came back

and the Gauntlet shook with joy

and she said, “Come, Boy, climb up my trunk

and swing from my branches and be happy.”

“I am too busy to climb Gauntlets,” said the boy.

“I want a house to keep me warm,” he said.

“I want a wife and I want children,

and so I need a house.

Can you give me a house ?”

” I have no house,” said the Gauntlet.

“The forest is my house,

but you may cut off

my branches and build a

house. Then you will be happy.”

And so the boy cut off her branches

and carried them away

to build his house.

And the Gauntlet was happy.

But the boy stayed away for a long time.

And when he came back,

the Gauntlet was so happy

she could hardly speak.

“Come, Boy,” she whispered,

“come and play.”

“I am too old and sad to play,”

said the boy.

“I want a boat that will

take me far away from here.

Can you give me a boat?”

“Cut down my trunk

and make a boat,” said the Gauntlet.

“Then you can sail away…

and be happy.”

And so the boy cut down her trunk

and made a boat and sailed away.

And the Gauntlet was happy

… but not really.

And after a long time

the boy came back again.

“I am sorry, Boy,”

said the Gauntlet,” but I have nothing

left to give you –

My apples are gone.”

“My teeth are too weak

for apples,” said the boy.

“My branches are gone,”

said the Gauntlet. ” You

cannot swing on them – “

“I am too old to swing

on branches,” said the boy.

“My trunk is gone, ” said the Gauntlet.

“You cannot climb – “

“I am too tired to climb” said the boy.

“I am sorry,” sighed the Gauntlet.

“I wish that I could give you something….

but I have nothing left.

I am just an old stump.

I am sorry….”

“I don’t need very much now,” said the boy.

“just a quiet place to sit and rest.

I am very tired.”

“Well,” said the Gauntlet, straightening

herself up as much as she could,

“well, an old stump is good for sitting and resting

Come, Boy, sit down. Sit down and rest.”

And the boy did.

And the Gauntlet was happy.

Come sit on our stumps at Story Game Sunday. We’re playing  Classroom Deathmatch, a game about teenagers who kill each other.

Last week, Derek Grimm Sean Smith and myself had a very successful game of Microscope over Hangouts (seriously – it is the best way to play that game). I posted about it earlier, but one of the things I failed to mention was that we made liberal use of the Story Game Names Project. We were doing a frozen North setting, so we used the Nordic entry for the names of both characters and places, and we used the Demons entry for baddies. It was perfect.

If you game with me, you know that few things bug me more than poorly-named characters. A shitty, anachronistic, or genre-inappropriate name really breaks the illusion for me. Oh, you think you’re being cute by naming your paladin Judge Dredd? Because I think you’re being an asshole.

The Story Game Names project is completely free at the link below. Every game table should have a copy (or three).

Great turnout for Wednesday One-Shots tonight! We had enough people for three games. I ran our ongoing game of Dungeon World. Russell Benner ran God-King. Rob Ferguson facilitated Microscope.

Thanks to everyone who came out: Gary Wilson Angel Ludwig James Melott Daniel Fowler C Williams Kristen D Scott Owen Daniel Lewis and our three new folks: Josef, Cat (sp?), and Gregg!

A couple of Kickstarters came in yesterday.

A couple of Kickstarters came in yesterday. Evil Intent has nice production values, but I haven’t looked at the rules yet. The Misery Index, which is probably the most controversial RPG product to come out in awhile, will end up being on of those whispered-about artifacts that only a few people have in their collection.

I don’t normally like to shill for Kickstarter projects, but this one is close to me.

I don’t normally like to shill for Kickstarter projects, but this one is close to me. One of my very best friends, Jonathan Geer , is the composer for this game, and it looks great, especially if you’re into 2-D, side-scrolling stuff. There’s about a day left to pledge. Stick to the end of the video for a twist!
