We played The Extraordinary Adventures of Baron Munchausen on Sunday, which is a classic of the story game genre. It’s a pretty short game, so we played a round of Citadels afterward.
Baron Munchausen was fun. It is of a type we have been playing a lot on SGS lately, which is to say it is a game where the characters sit around a table and tell stories to each other. Other games like this include 1001 Nights, Society of Dreamers, and The Committee for the Exploration of Mysteries. Each of these games has a quasi-LARP quality, as they incorporate props and/or table rituals to facilitate the story. Baron Munchausen is definitely a progenitor of the form, as it has virtually no rules, whereas later releases, like The Committee and 1001 Nights, have incorporated mechanics that make them feel a little more like a game. I’m not sure which is preferable, as I have had fun with all of them.

Another fun game of Dungeon World last night. Our party completed their exploration of the ghost ship, Red Scorpion, and then escaped to Reaver’s Rock using Quaal’s Feather Token (does anyone remember that one from 2nd ed.?). After resupplying, they made their way back to Gull Town for revelry and scheming, but not before a nail-biting encounter with a hydra.

For Story Game Sunday, we played the new Fiasco playset Unaussprechlichen Klutzen (which was awesome) and Questlandia.
For Wednesday, Dan ran One Last Job. On Thursday, we continued the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game.

Was it a dream I had, of Carcosa? Or was I really there, thrashing about? The light of the ulfire moon seemed to fill me with equal portions of lust and dread and impotence. There was a girl, too; yellow-of-skin from head to toe, as if dipped in yellow paint, and crying yellow tears. All I could think of doing was holding her and consoling her and burying my thumbs in her sockets and crushing her skull and calling out for approval from nameless gods while I slaked my hunger with her perfectly yellow brain meat . . . but I resisted this dark temptation.
And there were others . . .
The off-worlders, for a start: Gullyver, the Earthling; Zed #003, her “loyal” Engine of Destruction; Omid, the Psion; and Delgado, the Technician.
And the natives: Qua the Insatiable, a Barbarian, purple-of-skin; Verrin, the Ranger, green-of-skin; and Scabs, the Mutant, red-of-skin (most of the time).
And the Inevitable: Grezzurkt’taa, a foul sorcerer with even fouler designs for this world of Carcosa Most-Foul, who operated entirely beyond our perception.
And there were things that happened, too, as if in a dream . . .
The Deep Ones, answering the call of the blue woman’s bloodcurdling screams;
a midnight revel among barbarian raiders, with much feasting and fucking;
velociraptors with purple eye lasers, and a triceratops with six cybernetically-enhanced legs;
an abandoned research station in the sandy, yellow desert;
the visceral breeders, whose whip like-tails spray their fluid down her throat;
an emergency abortifacient made from a cocktail of poisonous fluids from his mouth-suckers;
Security Drone #093, featuring Octo-laser Array and Electromagnetic Ultra-Pulse;
an attempt to eat Security Drone #093 with the giant mouth that had suddenly appeared on his upper torso;
a vicious arboreal specimen with screaming, carnivorous, monkey-face pseudopods;
an orange girl in search of help;
an orange girl inadvertently beheaded;
an orange man, mounting another orange man in a runic circle; the squamous red mass above their heads pulsating in time with their thrusting, and a throat being sliced at the precise moment of ejaculation;
a group of ulfire cultists, dedicated to Nyarlathotep, feasting on the sweet pus extracted from their leader’s protruding growths;
a Rose Maiden, incapable of saving her people at the End of All Things, hurling herself into the maw of a dolm-colored grotesque just arisen from the Fecund Protoplasmic Pit;
a Violet Mist, filled with hate;
a spawn of the void, propagating itself inside the poor sap’s green genitals, and the wicked-precise castration that resulted therefrom (the second abortion in as many days);
4 blue men, 8 bone men, 5 yellow men, and 10 green men spilling their seed in a stone brazier shaped like a vagina, calling-forth the Child of Cthugha;
a man, having crossed a yellow lake in a yellow boat, to a yellow island, where he finds a yellow-robed man sitting atop a twisting, yellow throne, who he deems to be a Liar;
a yellow cavern, lined with the bodies of the yellow dust men, who will only stay themselves if the Yellow Song is sung;
an epic wrestling match with a massive blue spider with tiny human hands on the ends of its legs, the result of which is symbiotic stalemate;
the Fetor of the Depths, whose stench causes the poor sap to gag so violently, he spits-up some organ meat;
a final confrontation with the Inevitable;
and a rescue;
and a darkness spreading over the galaxy as the weird science of the planet of Carcosa fails to be contained to its throbbing, thrusting surface.
This is pretty cool. We played the beta version of this (called “Lapins & Lairs”) awhile back with Stephen Crawford. It will be neat to see the final product get the Bully Pulpit treatment, as they make very high quality stuff (such as Fiasco).
Tonight is the night to boost my favorite game designers, and John Harper is one of my very favorite.
Tonight is the night to boost my favorite game designers, and John Harper is one of my very favorite. You should consider becoming a Patron. He creates games with elegant mechanics, awesome layout, and stylish graphics (those old-school-blue World of Dungeons booklets I passed out during our first game of 2014 are his handiwork). Some games of his we have played:
World of Dungeons
Ghost Lines
Lady Blackbird
Lasers & Feelings
Danger Patrol (though not the gorgeous Thought Lords of Mars, which we’re going to play soon)
He gives away most of his games for free, so the least we can do is kick over a little cash every now and then.
If we’re being honest, there are a lot of really shitty playbooks and supplements for Dungeon World.
If we’re being honest, there are a lot of really shitty playbooks and supplements for Dungeon World. It is very much in its gold rush phase, and a lot of stuff hitting DriveThru hasn’t seen much play testing.
Johnstone Metzger’s stuff is an exception. His adventures (and the new monster manual, Terrors of the Ancient World) are excellent. The collection of playbooks at the link are interesting and thoughtfully produced, and I may start including them in the bundle I bring to the table. They’re Pay What You Want, so check them out!

Some pics from Anthology Friday and Cardboard Thursday. For Thursday, we continued the Pathfinder Card Game. I really, REALLY love that game. Its charms just keep unfurling the more you play it. We finished the introductory adventure, Perils of the Lost Coast, and are moving into the main adventure path, Rise of the Runelords, next week.
Our game of Dungeon World for the Anthology series was a ton of fun. Lots of laughter and high-stakes adventure, which is pretty much all you can ask for (and the pizza even came!!). We introduced some new characters last night:
Astrafel, the elven bard, who faced some very cruel die rolls last night, but also some of the most nail biting scenes;
Pigeon Head, the human ranger, whose name I initially hated, but grew to like once I realized he was a sort-of hermit/urban legend type character. His animal companion was a surly, heavy-breathing, obese pigeon;
and Elana, the human druid, who may have used her quarterstaff to inadvertently tee-ball the aforementioned pigeon out of a skeleton’s clutches.
The party was on their way to Reaver’s Rock, to spend some coin on whores and drink, before getting back to Gull Town. They were sidetracked, however, by the appearance of a legendary ghost ship, the Red Scorpion.

Hey everyone! As you may know, I have been running a (somewhat) regular online game since January. We’ve done Dungeon World, Monsterhearts, and a few other things here and there. It has always been fun, but it has become too hard for me to manage, what with all the live games we do around here (and, you know, my job).
So…that’s where Sean Smith comes in! He has offered to take over the online game for awhile. The first game he is going to run will be The ‘Hood, which is an Apocalypse World-based crime drama game. There is some info at the link.
The first session will be Monday, 09.08.14, from 7pm-10pm. Sean is guessing it will be several sessions in length. If you’re interested, post in the comments. An Event invite will be going up soon.
For today’s Story Game Sunday we played Lasers & Feelings.
For today’s Story Game Sunday we played Lasers & Feelings. We ran it with rotating GMs (the only way to play goofy space games). Lots of laughs all around, and a very complete story involving space hamsters, cat amazons, interstellar seduction, and a crystal planet called Quaythaag.
Thanks to Steve Mains Russell Benner Jessica Scott Ferrell Riley and Daniel Lewis for joining in the space adventure.
