This article is a bit long (and utterly depressing), but it’s worth reading. The same privilege-fueled, reactionary impulses that have given us the Tea Party, open-carry maniacs, and the War on Christmas (among other gifts) has now hit video games.

Why am I posting here? Well, I imagine most of us play video games, and even though Gamergate has been in the news for a couple of months now, this article does a good job highlighting the cultural forces that gave rise to it and sustain it. Also, roleplaying games got a little taste of this a few months ago with “consultancy-gate.” Granted, roleplaying games will never achieve this level of insanity, both because it is a niche hobby and its players can’t really hide behind internet anonymity. But it is nevertheless worth understanding.

Some pics from Story Game Sunday. We played Shock: Social Science Fiction. It has a very interesting mechanic, which I am led to believe is a streamlined version of the system found in Polaris. We told some cool stories (a couple of which were surprisingly intimate and “small” given the sci-fi setting), although it was commented that they felt too disconnected from each other. It was like a book of short stories in the same world rather than a novel. All-in-all, I liked it and would definitely play again, although perhaps with less people. It dragged on a bit at times with the number we had.

Last night for the Friday Anthology, we kicked-off our three-session run of In a Wicked Age. Like all first sessions of In a Wicked Age, there was a bit of a learning curve, but all in all it was a lot of fun. We had some very memorable characters, that’s for sure. The stand-outs for me were a priestess of Gemekaa, the fertility goddess, whose body was a cornucopia that produced “nectar,” and was an altar for her followers’ orgiastic excesses; and her nemesis, a cruel, self-flagellating prophet and his inquisitorial followers (Rob Ferguson would have loved everything about this session).

For Wednesday One-Shots this week, we played Dungeon World. David ran the main table and I ran a smaller table. My adventure took place in our Anthology world, in the magnificent city of Alizar, which is also the location of our In a Wicked Age games.

The Gauntlet is many. The Gauntlet is the Legion of the Beast. The Gauntlet has woven itself into the fabric of your life since the Dawn of Time.

The Gauntlet is the sin and the temptation. And the desire. And the pain and the loss.

Some pics from Story Game Sunday. We played Avery Mcdaldno ‘s The Quiet Year. It was the second time we have played it in the last year or so, and it was great. This was the first time we had played with the custom card deck and it was a much better experience, since we didn’t have to look at a reference sheet every turn (the cards are very pretty, too).

We had two tables of Dungeon World going. This was the final session of our Dagger Isles adventure until we pick it up again in December.

On October 19th, we will be playing BxB for Story Game Sunday. It is like the TV show the Bachelor, but with cute anime boys. There are two spots left to fill. We need exactly eight players to have two tables going at once. Follow the link!

I’ll let the people who played Danger Mountain! chime-in on their thoughts about it. As for Ocean, we ran a sort of remixed version of it. Instead of the traditional setup of amnesiacs in an underwater research facility crawling with monsters, we did amnesiacs in a mysterious castle patrolled by clockwork men (I just finished watching that particular episode of Doctor Who). It was pretty cool. We gave each of the characters two starting skills instead of one, which helped speed-up the game (Ocean can drag on a bit if you’re not careful).

Some pics from Story Game Sunday. We played Dread. We had a great time but, if I’m being honest, this game is starting to age a little. It was developed in the late 90’s, and it shows. The players have zero narrative authority, it allows secrets at the table (which is almost always awful), and there is an unnecessary amount of planning that goes into each session.

That said, we had a fun time, and using a Jenga tower for conflict resolution is awesome. It leads to some great tension, which is appropriate for a horror game. I would love to see this game get a re-design that takes into account all the mechanical developments in story games from the last 15 years.
