Here’s a link to episode 2 of Monsterhearts: Mercy Falls. I’m going to put the timecodes and annotations below for folks who are listening from their podcatcher app. As a reminder, if you’re a $2+ Patron of the Gauntlet, you get access to all eleven episodes of this series much faster (on the Patreon feed, they’re on episode 7, and will have all eleven episodes by early next week).

In this scene, I show a really good pacing technique, which is to cut away from a scene after a roll has taken place. If a scene has been going for a few minutes and you have other players waiting for their scene, a die roll is great excuse to jump away. In addition to letting you move the spotlight around, it also gives the session a slightly more cinematic feel.

Margo confronts Chad (14:20)

Serena makes a move (16:18)

Showdown in the boys’ bathroom (19:19)

Folks, I would like to submit +1 Forward for an Ennie this year and I need your help. I have to select one “must hear” episode for the submission. I’m setting up a poll, help me decide which one is the mostest “must hear”. Also, any comments on why would be very helpful.

Episode 98 of The Gauntlet Podcast is here!

Episode 98 of The Gauntlet Podcast is here!

Episode 98 of The Gauntlet Podcast is here! In this one, Richard Rogers, Lowell Francis and myself talk about some of the games we played in April. There is a lot of really interesting discussion here that kind of boils down to what each of us fundamentally wants out of a roleplaying game.

Speaking for myself, I find that lately I have no time for dogmatic views on roleplaying games (and I say this knowing I am someone who has occasionally held dogmatic views in the past). I’m enjoying games the way I want to enjoy them, and for me that means embracing traditional settings, themes and aesthetics, and re-contextualizing them for more indie-style play. You can hear Lowell and I really embracing that approach this episode, and I think it’s a sign of things to come.

Thanks to Paul Edson for the terrific edit this week.

Enjoy!

Pocket-Sized Play is back!

Pocket-Sized Play is back!

Pocket-Sized Play is back!

To celebrate 200 Patrons, we’re re-launching Pocket-Sized Play!

The first series is Monsterhearts: Mercy Falls. The participants are myself, Fraser Simons, Yoshi Creelman, Kevin Lovecraft and Phillip Wessels.

Monsterhearts: Mercy Falls is eleven total episodes, each around 30 minutes in length. We’re going to release one episode per day on the Patreon feed. For non-Patrons, the episodes will be released weekly through the Pocket-Sized Play podcast stream and our website (the first one is linked below).

Big thanks go to Fraser, who not only had the idea for this PSP relaunch, but who also edited the original Hangouts sessions from which the audio is taken.

Our main goal here is to not only entertain you, but to give you a glimpse into the Gauntlet’s play culture. We hope you find a lot in these sessions you can use in your own games.

Enjoy!

(And thanks to everyone who helped us hit our 200 Patron milestone!)
