Because of some difficulties traveling (bad roll), they had a random encounter with a group of gnolls that was meant as an obstacle. I tried to depict the gnolls as big and very dangerous. I had some of the gnolls leave in small groups to scout but made it clear that they weren’t too far away. I let them spy the group without being discovered, and they were discussing options of sneaking around but losing time vs. a risky distraction that would let them barge through – when the paladin decides to literally shout Leroy Jenkins and charge into the group. I asked, “Really, are you sure you want to do this? You’ll be outnumbered, there’s more out there, and the rest of the group wants to avoid combat,” he still wanted to charge.

Long story story short, he and another player have dead characters, two other kids are running but are being chased, and only 1 kid has a character who actually snuck away. I’m not worried about it fictionally, but how do you manage your group dynamic when one player torpedoes the game? Especially if their ages are 12-14, and there is out of game dating drama that I don’t get involved in going on as well? And the kid who started the whole ball rolling just returned to the group after a summer hiatus?

Had our first 7-9 Carouse roll tonight.

Had our first 7-9 Carouse roll tonight. We decided to get useful info instead of play it safe. Two of our party got the crap beat out of them in an alley, robbed and one got a pretty gnarly scar from the corner of his mouth to above his ear. We decided on future 7-9 rolls to never pick the “ensorcelled, entangled or tricked” option just because this was way more entertaining. Now we’re side questing to hunt the bastards down.

Tonight, Gauntlet: Rubber City played Dungeon World.

Tonight, Gauntlet: Rubber City played Dungeon World. The adventurers infiltrated the seclusium, navigated the garden labyrinth, defeated the Time Horror, had a disgusting dinner with a troll, and reached the entrance of the wizard’s tower.

Huge thanks to Greg Lanum, Ron (who G+ won’t let me tag for some reason), Amy, Mike, and Carlos for coming out and making it an amazing time!

(Note in the pictures all the correctly folded name tags [hotdog 4 lyf].)

This week I’m recommending Golden Sky Stories, a game about adorable animal spirits being warm-hearted and helping each other out.

To assist, I’ve created a little help sheet designed to get you going with your group. Hope you find it helpful!

Curious what the game is about? Check out the Actual-Play on Pocket Sized Play:

It’s been a few weeks since David LaFreniere’s giving dream posts.

It’s been a few weeks since David LaFreniere’s giving dream posts.

This week I’ve been thinking a lot about the voices of our community members. Voice has a strong role here. The podcasts, of course, but Hangout games are a primarily audio medium.

I’m giving a dream to Richard Rogers and Doyle Tavener for their rich, smooth, full voices. They are great at conveying “shit got real” when they GM.

I’m giving a dream to David LaFreniere and Jason Cordova for their economy and expressiveness. In character, they can say so much with a word or two.

I’m giving a dream to Lowell Francis for his voice of authority and contemplation.

Wasn’t sure if i should post this here or in Gauntlet Hangouts since it’s at a store.

Lot’s of interesting ones. Maybe some fuel for Gauntlet NJ sessions?

So I’m going to be running a Swords & Spaceships style game and I wanted to know everyone’s suggestions on classes that would be great for it. I already plan to use the core DW playbooks plus Adventures on Dungeon Planet and some of the Inverse World playbooks. Most likely Grim World as well. The idea is literally high fantasy, so all the normal races, creatures and magic will be mixed with technology and space travel. I thank you all in advance.
