Last week, James Mullen ran his game, Blood & Water, for Story Game Sunday and it was a lot of fun. I gather that it’s somewhat similar thematically to the TV show Being Human in that it’s about a group of monsters who used to be human sharing an apartment and trying to function as best as they can in the world. I’m not familiar with the show, but I didn’t have any issue grokking the story we were going for.

Character creation is quick and does a good job of generating characters who straddle the line between monsterous and human. One part of the character creation process that I really dug was answering the questions “What do I want that I don’t have?” and “What do I have that I don’t want?” You are encouraged to use one of the questions to explore your human side and the other to explore your monster side, so in our game we wound up with:

– the incarnation of an Egyptian god who wanted to appear on stage alongside Kristin Chenoweth, and was responsible for making sure the sun rose on time every day.

– a ghoul who wanted to get tenure at his university, and carried around the talking skull of the first man he ate.

– a swamp-monster who wanted to get his stick-and-mud-based art featured in an upscale gallery, and was compelled to look out for the well-being of a large family of rats.

Mechanics-wise, when a character wants to do something that requires a roll, they can ask someone else to roll for them, and any complications that arise from the roll will happen to the helper rather than the active character. If a helper fails, the active character can continue to ask for help from other characters before finally attempting to roll himself. Any complications that have already been rolled stick around, so there is the potential for a really satisfying snowball of failure or even situations where all of the helpers get screwed, but the active player manages to get everything they want in the end. It’s mechanically simple, but really satisfying in play.

Our story ramped up to a grand finale in front of a giant burning art installation complete with celebrity snogging, celebrity decapitation, assassination by alligator, the ascension of a child god, and a swamp monster drunkenly hiding in a champagne fountain. You know, the usual.

James mentioned that he might try to run a multi-session game in the future, and I’d definitely recommend keeping an eye out for it. We played our game at full tilt, but I think it might work even better with a little more room to breathe, since we wound up having to leave some aspects of our characters mostly unexplored.

Thanks a bunch to James for running it and to Horst Wurst and Declan (who I don’t see on g+) for joining in!

For a future Gauntlet City Limits game offering, I’m considering a sports-related RPG (not sure which one, quite yet). Since this would be set in Gauntlet City, I need a “mascot” for Gauntlet City (like the Atlanta Hawks, or the Los Angeles Dodgers, what have you).

Gauntleteers, hit me with some mascot suggestions! I’ll pick my favorite handful and post up a poll!

I’m considering offering to run Five Fires, a hip hop RPG by Quinn Murphy for my November games as part of Gauntlet City Limits.

I’m checking here for interest first because I want to make sure the game has enough players before I carve out some time to read it through and run it. This is me selling you on the game, people. I want to make this happen.

(this is also me worried about people not “getting it” when I post it up on Meetup and it doesn’t happen, which would make me pretty bummed).

I’ve been keenly interested in this game since I first heard about it. Here’s Quinn talking about it on his blog:

http://www.thoughtcrimegames.net/hip-hop-and-rpgs-the-five-fires/

——————————————–

Check out this snippet:

“Five Fires is a roleplaying game where you play an artist in traditional hip hop culture, trying to express yourself in a city and world that has criminalized your expression.

The “fires” in the the name refer to the five elements of hip hop:

1. MCing

2. B-Boying (breakdancing)

3. DJing

4. Graffiti Writing

5. Knowledge, Culture, Overstanding

These are five variations of the creative “fire”, and thus where the game gets it name. You play a young artist who gets a chance to burn brightly….will you burn out or shine a light for others to see?”

Quinn’s interview with Dr Tom the Frog got me really excited about it.

The game’s in beta, and I’ve never played it or heard of anyone who has played it. I don’t know why it seems to have stalled, but I’m so thrilled with the goals and the heart of this game that I’m going to run it.

The question is, can I make it work in Gauntlet City Limits, or do I need to build a group to play it? I’m hoping for GCL to be the place where we make it happen.

Games would be Tuesdays, Nov 1st and 15th at 9:00 PM Eastern.

Who would play Five Fires with me?!?!

How to encourage behaviour in a one shot

How to encourage behaviour in a one shot

How to encourage behaviour in a one shot

XP is (and maybe you want to argue me on this) a way of encouraging style appropriate behaviour in an RPG. You act in a certain way, you get the carrot of a measurable reward. D&D is about fighting monsters, so you get XP for killing monsters. Dungeon World is more about character interaction while you’re killing monsters, so you get XP for resolving your bonds.

But without advancement, XP has no meta purpose. You can’t use it for anything, so the little buzz from getting it is gone.

So: is there a similar system that can be used in a one shot? Some sort of near-tangible *ding* moment for a game that will never have any advancement? Is In-session advancement the solution?

I’m working on a hack of Lasers and Feelings based around exploring a (space) hulk.

I’m working on a hack of Lasers and Feelings based around exploring a (space) hulk. Creating the tables for the characters and adventure is good fun. I have the tables nearly complete, maybe even playable. The hard part is finding the right skill dipole. Lasers/Feelings is so perfect for its genre, the same with Sorcery/Swords from its game.

Right now I’m leaning towards Memories/Metal as the names. I’m still all over the place with what those skills mean. I considered using Memories to cover human, familiar things and your character’s connection to them. This would leave Metal to encompass personal risk, the unknown, and your character’s self sufficiency. I’ve thought about a dozen other possible meanings, each with their own problems.

I’ll keep you posted on my progress.

#Lovecraftesque #PlayReport from my in-person group. We had six people for the game and we played the House Sitter scenario by Jason Cordova. Our environment was perfect for the scenario. We sat on the floor of a converted porch in a cavernous 1920s brownstone. All we could see outside was the faint movement of trees in the nearly still autumn night.

We had some trouble with the shifting roles, much of the group was either not familiar with Lovecraft or story games. As the facilitator, I had to interrupt a few times to remind the Narrator of their limits, and the Witness of their autonomy, but we sorted through most of that in part one. By the time we came to the Final Horror, we were hitting the notes perfectly.

The Watchers and Narrators did excellent jobs making callbacks to established weirdness or clues. We had an old player piano that would only play “Strange Fruit,” and would start and stop at arbitrary moments, the dog whose eyes reflected red in the dark–the way humans’ eyes do–an arcane symbol which seemed to lie behind in every secret place on the property, and an dark ritual blade which at first seemed to be a military surplus knife.

I won’t pollute your play by revealing our Final Horror. You’ll have to find the truth of The Gardenia House on your own.

I will be running a second playtest of my “sci-fi episodic” World of Dungeons-ish hack late night Friday evening (9/30) and I still have one or two spots open. Would any of you like to participate?

Time:

11am-1am US PST (Friday night/Saturday morning)

6am-8am GMT (Saturday morning)

Since this isn’t Gauntlet exclusive, I’ll be running it over roll20 (free) and Teamspeak 3 (free).

Send me a chat or post below if you are interested and I’ll send you the 5 page Alpha v0.2.

Live long and prosper!

I want to say thank you to everyone who has thus far participated in any of my games, Mid-Day or on Saturday.

I want to say thank you to everyone who has thus far participated in any of my games, Mid-Day or on Saturday. It’s really great how the community has given me a chance to GM and be involved in the goings-on. Can’t thank you enough.

Now, I want to throw a quick poll on here to see if I can try and get a better sense of how to best plan for the mid-day games in the future.

For a reference, the time slot is:

9:00AM-1:00 PM PST

11:00AM-3:00PM CST

5:00PM-9:00PM GMT

If you are sometimes or always available in the mid-day time slot, which day of the week works best/most consistently? Thanks for the feedback!
