I’m doing a collaborative dungeon-stocking project (as I did back in July), but this time I’m looking for writers other than cis-het, able-bodied white guys like myself. Is it appropriate to share it here?
Let me give you another reason to consider running games for the Gauntlet (or elsewhere online).
Take a look around if you’re at home. Perhaps go to another room where you have your shelves. Maybe you can check your pdf folders. Or scan your DriveThru library for things you haven’t yet downloaded.
How many games do you have that you’ve never gotten to the table? Even cut out the ones you’re just slightly interested in. I’d be willing to bet for a ton of you that’s a double-digit number. Maybe even the triple digits. Kickstarters, Bundles of Holding, free downloads, Black Friday sales—they all just look so cool. You want to try these games, but RPGs make that a challenge. Getting f2f pick up groups interested in a niche game isn’t easy—but online, that’s a different story.
This year I’ve cleared two dozen games off my list—playing or running for The Gauntlet. You can too.
Some of you have heard this before, but I want more GMs. I’m here to work with anyone who has thought about running games for The Gauntlet Hangouts (or anywhere online). We’re opening up new Patreon spots, so we’ll have more room and opportunities for GMs next year. I’ll be glad to talk with you one-on-one to…figure out technical issues; go over what you’re thinking about running; discuss technique; get advice about running online; break down your planning; look at online tools; tell me about what you dig about GMing; or talk you down from the panic ledge.
If you want advice, I’m glad help—but if you just want someone to listen, I’ll do that. I may not have all the info or specific game advice, but I’ll do my level best to help and direct you to folks who do have that.
You can email me or hit me up on Slack if you have questions or want to talk. If you’ve posted interested on one of my threads before, I’m going to hit you up next week to check in.
Happy eating food and sleeping and watching soccer day! I had a question for the group at large: my group is going to do an all wizard production of chicago (campaign, sorry it is a joke we feel the need to make), I am playing a Necro, one friend is playing a Tower Mage, and our last buddy wants to play a wizard that has a kind of focus on illusory magic. I was wondering if anyone had any advice or thoughts about the illusory magic user, this one had some of our eyes so any thoughts on if you found the playbook to be interesting would be great as well!
Not RPG-related, but we’re heading into a very tricky time of year for a lot of people, particularly queer people.
Not RPG-related, but we’re heading into a very tricky time of year for a lot of people, particularly queer people. For a lot of folks, the holidays are a really fraught and melancholy time, because while the rest of the country is traveling and making merry, they are being reminded of their outsider status among their family, or are desperately summoning the strength to deal with arguments and other bullshit. And, honestly, Trump is just going to make that worse for a lot of folks (non-queer people: that frustration you feel with your Trump-supporting family at Thanksgiving is a little taste of what a lot of queer people have had to put up with for most of their lives; welcome to the party).
Anyway, I’m posting here to let those folks know: I see you and I’m happy to chat privately over the next couple of days if you need it.
On our Slack right now, a conversation about “the nerdiest thing you ever participated in” is taking place, as if…
On our Slack right now, a conversation about “the nerdiest thing you ever participated in” is taking place, as if the answer is not “the Gauntlet Slack.”
I was chatting with Brian Holland and was thinking I would share some thoughts with the rest of the community to see what people think.
This year, instead of writing a novel for NaNoWriMo, I’ve been writing a project that may possibly be released as a “Sword Breaker Presents:” product. The basic idea is sort of a journal full of descriptions of magic items and where they might be found. Jesse Ross and I thought it might be cool to release it as a stand-alone book with no stats. That way, it could be given directly to the players and they could decide if they wanted to pursue any of the entries. We would have downloadable stat books for various systems that the GM could reference.
Here’s where all this is going. Robert Bohl once posted that he didn’t like system neutral stuff because game materials are always influenced by the gaming preferences of the creator (correct me if my paraphrasing is off Rob). That holds up in this case. As I’m writing these, even as just prose journal entries, I have thought about how I might write them up for Dungeon World. Jesse and I talked about possibly hiring or recruiting “experts” to write up the stats for other systems. I have to admit, I think a lot of my entries would be hard for some systems to deal with.
An example of this is a powerful item with numerous abilities. In a lot of games this kind of thing would be annoying. It would either be too “O.P” or the GM would have to negotiate the slow reveal of each power. In DW you can simply make a Compendium Class out of it. The player can unlock the awesome as they level up.
A lot of the items aren’t really easy to use. Unlike a lot of game systems where powers are sort of on, off, one-shot, or pay-as-you-go, I can build in iffy results and consequences with a few easy lines for DW.
The New Sword Breaker is the biggest and best looking one yet!
The New Sword Breaker is the biggest and best looking one yet! Check out the fantastic art and layout by Jesse Ross! This one is a Thundarr inspired, science fantasy mashup! There were contributions and some helpful guidance from several Gauntleteers. Special thanks goes out to Jeremy Strandberg, Charles Gatz, Jeremy Scott, Michael G. Barford, and James Etheridge!

RPG podcasts are awesome, and I think ours are some of the best. RPG zines are great fun, and Codex is absolutely killer. But the crown jewel of the Gauntlet experience is Gauntlet Hangouts. There are presently 115 sessions on the Gauntlet Hangouts calendar through January, spread out over 45 different game events. There will be many more added before the year is up, and I’d wager just a handful will not fill to capacity.
This is not some accident. Gauntlet Hangouts is growing because our play culture is top notch. Imagine going to a convention where the players and GMs always give 100%, where aftercare and good citizenship is practically fetishized, and where the variety of games available to play is downright dazzling.
Now imagine that same convention never ends.
It’s a space where folks are serious about playing games, but equally serious about taking care of one another. I think it’s pretty special, and a lot of other people do, too.
