Happenings in Christmas Village Day 1 #HiCV

A 25 day collaboration of magical holiday joy for queer gamers

HiCV 2017 will be fully released in PDF on Christmas Day, Monday December 25th, featuring further development of last year’s content as well as brand new fun for Dungeon World and Monsterhearts. See our work in progress here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1En3oIqLoNAqgjnWNR13Pf5_zvDDP14dZ

For Dungeon World: The Far North is always rather inhospitable this time of the year. This blizzard is something else, though. Still, rumor has it that there’s magic and treasure to be discovered only in this season. What shelter in the village of Bellhome do you duck into to escape the snow?

For Monsterhearts 2: The Annual Community Snowball Fight is going down. The real game is getting alone with someone special, or getting a jump on whoever needs to be brought down. Where can you pull someone aside, or sneak attack that asshole right in front of everyone?

You can comment here with your submissions. Submissions need to be a single sentence, or 2-3 very short sentences. By submitting here, you’re agreeing to let us use your submission (you’ll get credit in the PDF). We may reuse your submission in further editions of HiCV (maybe even print editions someday).

The roleplaying community is fantastic and supportive. We have an opportunity to shine and deliver that goodness to our fellow gamers who are queer and may not have high hopes for an enjoyable holiday season. Being queer around the holidays can be a rough experience, as many queer folks do not have comfortable relationships with their families. The reality for a lot of queer people is that if they don’t have plans with friends, they do not have holiday plans. Let’s fill some of that void with some RPG magic! We’re aiming for holiday content here. You don’t need to worry about writing queer content. Thank you for being a part of this.

If anyone wants to play HiCV content, comment below. We are organizing sessions throughout the month and even into January. We would love to spend the holidays with you!

What was the name of the game mentioned a while back that sounded like it was basically Aliens the RPG, and was hacked to be Storm Troopers…my brain is not working today.

I was listening to the Discern Realities podcast today (which I love) and the hosts mentioned a resource folder.

Folks, we are down to just 35 spots remaining in the $7 Patreon tier. If you have friends who have expressed an interest in gaming with the Gauntlet, you need to let them know that the best way to get involved is to grab one of these. New $7 spots will not be available again until July 1st (at the earliest–it may be later, depending on whether the calendar can support more players).

Don’t miss out!

We have had a terrific response so far with the new $7 reward tier. We have just 65 spots remaining and it’s not even 7 AM on the first day. Folks, if you intend to game with the Gauntlet in 2018, the window is closing pretty fast.

$7 Patreon Spots Become Available at Midnight EDT!

We are swinging open the doors on Gauntlet Hangouts! 100 more of the much-coveted $7 Patreon spots will become available at midnight. $7+ Patreon supporters get one week of RSVP priority for new games that hit the Gauntlet Hangouts calendar.

I have updated our website to include some basics about Gauntlet Hangouts. You can check that out here:

http://www.gauntlet-rpg.com/gauntlet-hangouts.html

I will also be monitoring this thread throughout the day. If you have questions about anything related to Gauntlet Hangouts (apart from running games, which is something we will address in more detail down the road), please post them in the comments. Technology requirements, how to access games, communicating with GMs, getting notified of new games, etc. I am here to answer your questions!

Gauntlet Hangouts is truly fabulous. If you have any desire to actually play roleplaying games next year (rather than just reading rulebooks and/or listening to actors play them), it is a great place to be. We treat our game calendar with a level of seriousness and rigor you won’t find anywhere else; our play culture is one of mutual admiration and care; and our sessions are just plain fun. Gauntlet Hangouts is the best gaming I have ever done; I have made so many friends, and have had so many exhilarating play moments, I sometimes have to pinch myself because I can’t believe I have this wildly special place available to me.

Big picture, your $7 Patreon pledge goes a long way toward supporting everything we do in the Gauntlet. We further reward that support with exclusive podcast content, PDF copies of Codex, and access to our Slack group. And here is a special note about our Slack group (which is its own wondrous thing): you have access to so much awesome stuff there. We organize pick-up games, work on special creative projects, and just generally support one another. You also have a huge amount of access to the podcast teams, which is something I know a lot of folks value.

Anyway, like I said, we’re swinging the doors open at midnight! We hope you’ll join us for an awesome 2018!

Hey everyone, I am in a bit of a pickle and I don’t know if anyone can help me out.

Hey everyone, I am in a bit of a pickle and I don’t know if anyone can help me out. I teach middle school and tomorrow some of my 8th graders are running campaigns for students and rye response has been overwhelming. We are looking for a bunch of level one pregen characters to save time on creation as the kids have less than an hour each week after school and they are chomping at the bit to get adventuring. The books they have are D&D 3.5 (inherited from older gamers) and we are having the hardest time trying to find prefilled out 3.5 sheets. There are TONS of 5e sheets for D&D encounters, but the students are unfamiliar with things like ‘streetwise’ … anyone have on their computer a bunch of old level one characters or know a place we can get some. I know there are a bunch of generators online but most are blocked by our schools webfilter (plus, trying to get a dozen kids to fill those out timely is a nightmare). And advice? First game is tomorrow at 3:00, so we will take anything we can get.

After years of working with tabletop RPGs and education, it was time to write a game that was not only entertaining but educational. A game I would want to use in my own classroom. @keenan_patrick and I have been working on a project we are proud to finally share! Ross Rifles is a tabletop RPG where players take on the role of a member of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the First World War. Using the game, characters can experience the horrors of a new era of warfare, form bonds with their fellow soldiers, and discover a developing Canadian national identity.

This is only a mock-up of the cover. The game is currently ready to play, but we are taking our time to expand the content of the book, carefully playtest the game with the community, and connect with museums and veterans groups to ensure that we’ve respectfully and accurately depicted the lives of soldiers who fought in WWI.

I’ll be posting about the game periodically on this profile. If you’re interested in the project or trying the game, follow us @dundaswestgames and give us a like on Facebook at facebook.com/dundaswestgames!

Awesome stuff on Lulu today only sale. Class Warfare is my top recommendation, but most of what this gentleman has on offer is pretty rad. Any other recommendations?

The collaborative dungeon The Halls Untoward was a fun project, but scanning the names list afterwards it seems it was mostly men involved. I’d like to see what happens with other voices at the helm. I’m looking for women, people of color, LGBTQ and/or disabled writers (or illustrators?) who dig this sort of thing. If that’s you, please jump in and request edit access. If that’s not you, you can certainly help by spreading the word to your friends who are!
