I thought I’d seen a list of names for arcane tomes or somesuch in one of the Codex issues, but now that I’m looking through my collection, I can’t seem to find it. Closest I came were the books in Codex Yellow, but I really thought there was a list of evil, medieval tomes somewhere. Or am I making that up?

We’d like to do some crowdsourcing for the miscellany in Codex – Glamour. The miscellany is called “Three Dozen Cultural Fashion Items.” Submissions need to be a single sentence, or 2-3 short sentences. By submitting here, you’re agreeing to let us use it (you’ll get a credit on the issue). We’re looking for evocative things; the purpose of the miscellany is to inspire the reader.

We need three pieces of information for each entry: 1) A name or description of a group, 2) an item of clothing or accessory they are known to wear, and 3) the significance of that item of clothing or accessory. Your entries can be from any genre. They should not be from real-world cultures.

Here are some examples:

“House Casterwain has many ancient enemies and is always engaged in some sort of feud or power struggle. The men and women of the family have taken to wearing rows of ruby studs in their ears, each representing a foiled attempt on their life. Newborn Casterwains are given a ruby-studded pacifier if they survived such an attempt while in the womb.”

“The citizens of the City of Carcosa, ever-mindful of the way the strange energies flowing through the Yellow Metropolis alter one’s perceptions of other people, have taken to wearing large, fashionable veils that completely obscure the face, so as to minimize the fright or confusion associated with apparent, sudden transmogrification.”

“The Devil Sharks street racing gang are said to have access to a ‘third eye,’ a well of psychic sensitivity that helps them safely negotiate the streets of Neo-Mumbai at blinding speeds. Whether this is true or not is unknown, but each member of the gang receives a stylized, personalized eyeball tattoo on their forehead in order to reinforce the brand.”

If a fit of shameless self-promotion and general bubbly pride at my player’s for a campaign I am running for my podcast, I wanted to share an episode with you. With the joke aside, in the Slack there was a conversation about character death. A lot of things were swirling around, but one of my main thoughts when it comes to the death of a character is to give the player space, let them take over for a bit if the scene allows, and (something I’m still trying to employ) let that character’s actions and personality resonate through the rest of the campaign. I won’t tell you who, but it comes as a surprise and we are not very deep into the campaign so far. Things just started to steamroll and some big fails lead to some tough consequences. I just wanted to put this out here as my contribution to the ongoing conversation about how we treat character death at the table.

力量 – Strength

灵巧 – Dexterity

耐力 – Constitution

知识 – Intelligence

智慧 – Wisdom

魅力 – Charisma

I’m taking some liberties with both Constitution and Intelligence, because of how they’re frequently used – in Lamentations of the Flame Princess specifically, Intelligence is a sum of your knowledge. It doesn’t supplant player logic. And then I can’t really find a non-awkward way to translate “Constitution” – there’s a word for physique but to me it connotes bodybuilding and strength? And then 耐力 connotes stuff about resolve and determination. Neither is really great for it.

I used two clocks in my DW game last night that ended up being very effective. I have linked the rules document I sent to the players. I thought some of you would be interested.

This is like the 25th game in the campaign and I am not going to try to fill in too many of the details here, but just to give you some context as to the setup and the rationale for the clocks…

Fancourt is a village that the heroes left to go fight a witch on a mountain. While investigating the witch’s lair they discover that the witch — and others in the village — are aligned with an elder race, the Carcosians, aka the Chimera (interplanetary masses of worms that are into illusion and body horror). The party realizes the town is in danger and try to rush back to save it.

At this point, I handed out some VERY abbreviated stats for their followers and a few key NPCs and handed those over to the PCs. Then I described the twisted Un-Men — pieces of sewn together flesh of men, fish, and local beasts boiling up out of the sewers and attacking the town.

So, I really wanted the PCs to be invested in the town a bit more, so I used the clocks to determine the situation the party would find when they arrive. (I also did not want the NPCs to solve their problem.)

This is the report from yesterday’s City of Mist game. Patricia is still side-lined due to me being the GM, and Liza’s player is still out for IRL reasons. It’s doubtful we’ll see her return, but I’m keeping her portrait there just in case.

After getting some basic information last week, this week, they track down one of the other people involved in the fight at the Candlestick, that still leaves the panicky wizard that fireballed them and another they haven’t met yet (but whose name is on the board).
