I’m having some thoughts about a thing related to Dungeon World. It’s something that, frankly, only The Gauntlet can pull off. Thoughts, thoughts, thoughts…More info forthcoming.

It’s the best gig in the world! For a single weekend, your job is to eat their food, watch their cable, and swim in their pool. You have this huge, amazing house all to yourself. Well, almost to yourself…”

I’m a little late to this party, but Meguey Baker has a Patreon where she is making beautiful little games focused on the seasons. I’ve taken a look at a few of them so far, and they are really neat. Even though they are new games, they feel . . . ancient, somehow; like the gaming equivalent of a folk tale.

Check out her Patreon! This is good stuff.

Now that #Threeforged  is over, I wanted to share my Stage 1 game.

Now that #Threeforged  is over, I wanted to share my Stage 1 game. It’s called Public Access, and it originated from a conversation we had in Episode 22 of the Gauntlet Podcast, in which we discussed games we’d like to play that don’t yet exist.

It’s a slim, simple game, but I’m proud of it. We play-tested it once, and it hit my major design goal, which was a collaborative mystery game that is also genuinely creepy (which should also make it apparent why Becky Annison  and Joshua Fox’s Lovecraftesque is so exciting to me).

To my great disappointment, Public Access didn’t make it through to the end of the contest, but people who read and enjoyed Transmission will see a lot of its DNA in that game (I’m tagging a few of the people I remember who said they liked that one, in case they want to give this one a look, too: Wendy Gorman  Robert Bohl Chris Longhurst Robert Carnel).

Anyway, I welcome any feedback you might have. And if you ever want to give it a go, please let me know.

OSR Tuesdays Spotlight

OSR Tuesdays Spotlight

OSR Tuesdays Spotlight

This will be an occasional entry/short essay on various things OSR and OSR Tuesdays related.

Probably the most important thing I can tell you before we play Lamentations of the Flame Princess (or any OSR RPG, for that matter) is to forget that you are playing D&D.

That’s because D&D takes up so much space in our collective RPG experiences, we often come to the table with preconceived notions about how D&D should be played. I’m here to tell you that it’s not true; you can play this game anyway you like.

In particular, there are any numbers of tools that gamers familiar with ‘story-games’ have in their toolkit, which can be employed during a session of LotFP. As a GM, I have used Fail-Forward, Roll With it, Say Yes or Roll the Dice, Say Yes and …, just to name a few.

I hope that all you, when you play, will remember the lessons you have learned from other games and apply them to playing this game. Just because it’s not written down somewhere, doesn’t mean you can’t use it.

Hey Jason, I just finished listening to the podcast, it was a great one. However, I didn’t know you would be leaving Houston this soon. In all likelihood I won’t have another opportunity to see you in person before you leave. I wish I could tell you this in person but this message will have to suffice. I want to thank you for opening your house to not only me but everyone in the gauntlet week after week. I don’t know if I told you this, but my very first RPG experience I had was a little over a year ago and it was pretty terrible. I drove an hour to a game shop for a Dungeons & Dragons game and no one so much as even asked my name. The very next week I found a Friday night Dungeon World game on the Meetup, and when I showed up and you not only opened your house to me, but you were very patient and engaging, that more than made up for my previous experience with FtF gaming. Because of the Gauntlet and, by default, in large part because of you, I have this great new hobby I will no doubt keep up with for the rest of my life. I really just wanted to say thank you for that
