I am interesting in running a campaign on Wednesdays in the new year, and I wanted to gauge interest in my idea. If you are interested in playing Heroquest set in Glorantha on Wednesdays please indicate so by commenting below.
I would like to run a campaign of Robin Laws’ Heroquest, set in Glorantha. I’ll be using the Kingdom of Sartar campaign, mixed with my own scenarios and other material.
So, what is Heroquest?
* Written by Robin Laws.
* A game engine designed specifically to emulate stories, and rather than a simulation style rpg.
* Heroquest mechanics rely on an abstract contest mechanic where magic, skills, fighting ability and anything else that can be used to solve a problem is given a rating, which is then contested vs resistances based on story logic, rather than the difficulty of the action.
What is Glorantha?
* Glorantha is a fantasy world, created by Greg Stafford (author of Pendragon) which is based on myth and legend from the bronze age.
* The main theme of Glorantha is man’s interaction with the spiritual world, made manifest through magic.
* Glorantha is not a planet, but a gigantic slab of the Earth that floats in an endless sea. The sun is not a fiery ball of plasma, but a god that travels through the sky during the day and though the dark and mysterious underworld at night.
* In Glorantha the gods are real, and are regularly interacted with during sacred ceremonies. Likewise, spirits are real, Wizards cast working spells and Mystics call upon powers developed through discipline and study.
* Glorantha doesn’t look like a generic fantasy world, but a place more like the world of Alexander the Great and Xerxes of Persia.
* The players will be regularly interact with mythic forces through Heroquesting, developing powers through interaction with gods, demons and other mythic figures which they are then able to use against their mundane foes.
* The campaign will begin in Sartar, and all players will belong to the same tribe. The first session will be devoted to creating the characters’ tribe, which will give context and purpose to the characters actions.
* I need from three to four regular players who are willing to commit to attending most sessions. Other players can drop in and out as they wish, but as a campaign, it will be difficult to maintain a long story without at least three core participants.
* Glorantha has a reputation of being a very dense background. I want to stress that you do not need to know a single thing about Glorantha in order to play.
If you wish I can give you some short (one page) background info each week, that can become immediately useful to you during the following session. But it’s not necessary in order to play.
* What is useful to you is to know something about myth and legend, as well as story telling. This sort of knowledge will allow you to exploit both the game system and the background to your advantage.
I would be happy to answer any questions any of you might have. And of course, this campaign will only be possible if there is an open slot in the schedule and enough player interest.
