Hi everybody!
What exactly is American freeform? So it is the opposite number to the “Nordic” form as presented in Archipelago 3?

No, a better way to think of it is American Freeform is “North American storygame LARPs” and Nordic Larp is “European storygame LARPs”.

There are also a bunch of trad game equivalents for LARPs as well, and I am majorly oversimplifying.

Lizzie Stark wrote a good article titled Introducing American Freeform, I’d start there.

American freeform is kind of my home, so I am happy to chat about it. Lizzie’s article can be seen here: http://leavingmundania.com/2013/11/18/introducing-american-freeform/

Many of you know both Nordic and American. What’s different about them? Is there a difference that both traditions can agree on?

Nordic larp is not actually a type of larp, but a term that identifies the region the games come from, though there are certainly traditions distinct to games that originate there. American freeform most specifically draws on the traditions of “jeepform”, which you can read about here: http://jeepen.org/
The term”American freeform” is still very new, and it evolved as a way of distinguishing the games from the ones that were more commonly seen in the US (parlor larps and boff larps) and from the jeepform and other Nordic traditions that inspired it. It has a few loose principles that Lizzie outlines in the article, though any larpwright can apply the title as they see fit.

Jason Cox Thanks for the link. This is going take sometime to digest. As someone who has been getting into improv comedy via numerous podcasts, I am already seeing some commonality.
