Hey folks. I know a lot of people are concerned about where The Gauntlet is going once G+ shuts down. The organizers are discussing that and getting it figured out. We will let you know as soon as we have a solution. For now, feel free to discuss the matter in the comments here. No need to make new posts on the page about it.
Hey folks.
Hey folks.
I’m afraid I will lose contact with you folks, which makes me really sad. I hope I’m wrong.

I have enjoyed the indie game community on Google +, and I will miss it. I’m not immediately going to jump into a new platform as it seems like there’s a lot of dust that will need to settle. I’d also like to see what enterprising developers will do to fill in the vacuum.
Part of me thinks it would be cool for the gaming community to band together (maybe via some crowdsourcing) to develop its own robust social network site–one that would be independent of Facebook, etc. and which would be designed with an inclusive game community in mind.

Just in time for the possibility of my work schedule changing to allow my participation, this happens.

I’m hearing a lot of talk about WeMe as an option, but also a lot of people suggesting its heavily populated by alt right folks moving there after getting booted off elsewhere (Alex Jones types, etc). O don’t know how true that is or if it would impact us, but worth keeping an eye out for.

My understanding is that some folks booted from other social media for selling firearms quickly moved there, and will quickly move to any new social media platform to sell their wares. To some degree it’s inescapable, to a much bigger degree it’s good to call that out so people know what they are getting into.

The alt-right presence there was because the company also has no policies regarding speech, it’s allllll free speech there, AFAIK, so makes sense that the alt-right would be all about it.

They have some of the usual vaguely worded “don’t post hate” stuff, but yeah…

MeWe looks to be a privacy first Facebook clone. I’m not sure how you’d see altright garbage without being friends with those people. It does sound like the site is pretty blasé about who they host. The site is also a bit clunky. Still, maybe closest to what G+ is from the alternatives I’ve seen so far.

One of the more populated groups is anti sjw looks like. But yeah I think you could just block people and join selective groups and be fine.

I think I’m the only ttrpg human on G+ who doesn’t think this is a big deal. The Gauntlet will be fine and that’s the main thing that matters to me. Everyone else is welcome to join us wherever we end up.

I’m also kind of glad to see some of the gross parts of G+ ttrpgs go away. There are some gross fucking G+ groups out there and it delights me they are going to lose their spaces.

Jason Cordova So many of the books you’ve spoke about on Fear of a Black Dragon came out of the space here. Yoon-Suin developed because of Patrick and David racing each other to write books. (David won.) Jez did layout for Secret Santicore and everyone figured out he was hot shit. He’s involved in: Tales of the Scarecrow, Qelong, Death Frost Doom 2.0, and Scenic Dunnsmouth. Kiel met James on G+ so we get Blood in the Chocolate. The Hydra Co-op formed here so we have Operational Unfathomable and Slumbering Ursine Dunes. G+ was a big deal. So much creative work was produced through relationships formed here. Its being eaten by google sucks.

Ramanan S Hmm, yeah, it might be a bigger OSR problem than other parts of the hobby.

Ramanan S I mean, don’t get me wrong—I think this sucks. I wish Google wasn’t doing this the way they are doing it. We’re going to have to figure out new ways of telegraphing certain types of information, particularly game schedule announcements. But for me, roleplaying games = wherever The Gauntlet is.

Jason Cordova Could always go back to some sort of forum. Would probably make sense for something focused like the Gauntlet.

One thing to consider: if you can’t see where a social network’s revenue comes from, there is a better than average chance the answer is “some country’s intelligence agency”. (Of just the people publicly known to be on Facebook’s early board, for example, former spooks and CIA elbow-rubbers are well represented.)
When looking at MeWe, its financial backing seems a bit more suspect than whatever alt-right presence there is.

Lowell Francis I can definitely say that minds.com seems right wing AF, so wouldn’t suggest it. Apparently thought mewe’s founders split politically – ones lib, ones con.

It feels like a federated thing like diaspora (eg pluspora or another pod you trust) or mastatdon really is the only way to A) control who is on it and their tone and B) make sure you aren’t the product.
I had plans a while back to set up a diaspora pod… Maybe I’ll look into it again.

I’d love to see the blog use indieweb technologies indiewebify.me – IndieWebify.Me – a guide to getting you on the IndieWeb so it becomes the focal point then gets syndicated to other social media and conversations get brought back.

Yeah, i can see three effective ways with either
A: Hosting a whole forum on a website. Would provide good subdivisions and familiar functions
B: Subreddit. Whole system is in place but no subdivisions
C: Public discord.

But yes, my vote is for a federated/decentralized platform.

1) Jason, thanks for all your hard work on this and everything else.
2)It seems to me (and if somebody upthread already said this, I missed it and I’m sorry for repeating) the biggest issue is getting letting people who aren’t in the Slack know about games on the calendar. The G+ Hangouts community was my gateway into The Gauntlet, and getting that in front of as many eyes as possible is (I suspect, are there numbers?) a key way for The Gauntlet to grow.. So as much as it sucks, a dedicated facebook group, or sub-reddit, with the same strict posting rules as the G+ community, heavily moderated to make sure that Hangouts games with links to the calendar are the only thing that go up might be the best way to make that happen.

Still feels like early days for what’s next. I don’t think it’ll be MeWe.

Ramanan S I don’t think it’s going to be MeWe, either. People just need to get their $6 out and join us on The Gauntlet Slack.

Jason Cordova I was going to seems like you already have a space. How many people involved in the Gauntlet aren’t on Slack? Is it hard to get those people to make that jump.

There is also probably a comfortable upper bound on how big a community can be and feel like a community, and maybe $6 helps set that bar.

Ramanan S Yeah, the $6 is actually a restriction on growth. We don’t want it to be that big because it will reduce the quality of the interactions there. That said, we’ve got room at this point.

Ramanan S We don’t pay for Slack (it would literally cost us something like $20K a year). And, in fact, we like the ephemeral nature of free Slack. Everyone treats the space more like a conversation, like a place they can be a little bit more loose because they know nothing is permanent there.

If something really good happens on the Slack, like some kind of mind-blowing conversation or idea, we chime in to make sure it gets saved.

X-post from another thread since I want to throw in my 2 cents:
The Internet is what it is. There’s no big/popular website where you can be surrounded by only the people you choose. But! There are certainly websites that give users the right tools to have positive experiences. I hate the alt-right, but IMHO it’s best to make community decisions based on which service has the best features and usability vs rumors about whether people you hate might be lurking on some fraction of its millions of pages. YouTube is full of weird freaky shit but we all use that right?
That’s why I think Reddit (and Discord for chat) is the best option. There are already thriving RPG communities there, and subs are easy to create, customize, and moderate. Check out r/cyberpunk to see how personalized communities can get. Reddit and Discord have amazingly sleek web and mobile interfaces.

Ali Ryder I like Discord for a lot of things, but it’s necessarily synchronous. If a fun conversation happens while you’re away, you miss it, and there is no way to contribute to the conversation

John Willson I know everyone loves G+, but I have personally always kind of resented it and have been hoping it would sunset for awhile now. I view the closing as an opportunity to go somewhere other people are actually at. I do think this move by Google feels unnecessarily sudden. Why drag it out for years just to suddenly announce its closure? They should have done this four years ago.

I hope that the switch to a new platform does not end up imposing any new financial barriers to participation in general dialogue or gaming via Gauntlet Hangouts. Given preexisting social inequalities, such a barrier would be most burdensome for PoC &/or women gamers, who we need more of. Alternatively, such financial requirements could be waived for individuals who identify with a marginalized, underrepresented community.
