Hi Lovely people!
Tomorrow is a big day for me, I’m releasing my first TTRPG as Early Access.
The game is called The Republic and I’ve been developing it with the help of Vincent Baker and Mark Redacted. It’s a game about Social Justice, Element Bending, and Piles of Dice. It’s being released at 8am GMT nov 18th and I’ve linked the website below. If anyone has a podcast/blog/whatever and wants to feature it though just hit me up and I’ll send you a sneaky media preview copy ASAP.
Ah was this your threeforged entry? If so I remember really liking that version of it and am looking forward to the release!

Hi Ashton McAllan, I saw your game in another post, and I love the concept. Are you okay with me trying to run it for my local story game meetup group and giving you feedback?

Hi James Iles ! It is! It’s has a lot of work done on it in the meantime but it’s still the same game at its core.
That sounds fine Johannes Oppermann ! How should I send you a copy?

I found this post, and printed the document. I’ll pitch it to my players and if we play it I’ll let you know how it went. I love to try new games and yours is a really interesting read. And very relevant to what I felt about the US election, too.
If this version is out of date, send me the version you’d like us to try.

After a more thorough read I am confused by the dice mechanics. Specifically, it is unclear to me what “bending the elements” means, what its benefits are, and how the mechanic works:
“If you bend the elements in your attempt to perform your action, set aside dice for the elements being bent, after the main roll, roll each twice, they are successful if either roll is successful but become dead if either is not.”
A character sheet and examples might help me grasp it better.

Yeah some play examples will be included in the larger full release.
In example for bending the elements: Tommon wants to break down a door that has been reinforced with an iron bar, the GM says that this is a “Strike to Kill, Injure or Destroy” and that it will require two successes. In order to do this Tommon uses one of his fire dice but also chooses to, in fiction, bend earth, summoning it up from the ground to pound into the door, for this Tommon “bends the elements” with an earth die which means he rolls it twice. One of his two rolls with the earth die is successful but one is not, so the dice counts as a success but still becomes dead. When he rolls his fire dice it is also successful which creates the two successes required to knock down the door.
The bending of the elements with the earth dice made it more likely to be successful than an earth die usually would be but also increased it’s chances of becoming dead.
Does that help at all?

That helps a lot, thanks! It also helps understand the flavor of the elements. Examples always make things clearer to me. The mechanics are charming, now I want to see how they work in play.
Will you also include some guidance on world building in the latter release (like examples for forces and resources)?

YG Mitchell – I feel that after our fun with Dogs in the Vineyard, this might be your cup of tea. Maybe some of the other UK Gauntleteers, too?

Yeah expanding the GMing section a bit and adding those examples is something I’m really looking forward to. I’ve always wanted to write a bestiary so…

Saffire Rainbo that’s very cool! My Meetup is tomorrow, so I’ll give it a try then. The dice mechanic is what I find enticing about the game. I felt not confident about Dogs in the Vineyard going in, too – but YG Mitchell made it work wonderfully via hangouts and roll20.
How about I let you people know how it went at the in-person Meetup, and then we can set up an online game on the Gauntlet UK calendar? Maybe you would even like to run it for us, Ashton McAllan?
There’s quite a tradition of the Gauntlet playtesting games, and also indie designers running their games on the Gauntlet. I would love to be in your game if you run it.

I’m happy to run an online game sometime! We even have a Roll20 API script on the website to help make dice rolls for The Republic easier in Roll20!

Yay, great! Count me in! Ping me when you do. I’m on CEST time though.

I’m on Adelaide time and can do most evenings (my time)? If someone wants to organise a game and do the scheduling etc, I’m happy to run the game

The playtest went great, Ashton McAllan! Would you like a full report?

That would be amazing if you have time? I’m going to set up a page on the website where I can link to writeups and reviews etc. and would love to link to anything you write on there. Plus, any feedback from playtesting is super valuable and helps me find what needs working on.

That’s great! I want to do a writeup while it’s still fresh in my head, but it’s close to 1am for me, so that will have to wait for tomorrow.
Let me just say quickly that we really enjoyed it, that I think it has a solid, fun, flexible and expandable gaming engine and an interesting setting. I also think the rules explanation needs work (mainly examples).
I didn’t use any forces and resources in our playtest, and never rolled any dice as a GM, instead scaling the opposition by the number of successes required. Maybe more when I have slept. #TheRepublicGame

Ashton McAllan – I’m done with the play report writeup. Should I link to it here, or where would you like to read it?
