Today on The Gauntlet Blog, I wrote about Gauntlet Con: Test Fire, a game design and playtest-focused version of our online convention. It’s just a proposal for now, but if you have any thoughts, please chime in here or directly on the post.

  1. Gosh I love this idea. Just the travel commitments make Metatopia attendance implausible for me, and I’ve always had excellent feedback from my Gauntlet play tests. Apologies if this was discussed in the post, but are you thinking of a lottery system for picking the designers, or a Firebase-alike first-to-respond with a waitlist?

  3. Jay Iles It’s early days, so not sure. I like a curated approach (for game diversity, designer diversity, and so forth) but we would have to create a process that is transparent to achieve that.

  5. As someone who is a freelance small business owner in the midwest with a fluctuating income and schedule from month to month, this sounds wonderful. It could potentially reduce anxiety and increase participation towards completion of my own games and helping with other designers’ games without needing to spend a lot of money and take time off to travel to the East Coast. Less con crud too. 🙂 As an indie game designer and supporter of the hobby who appreciates the welcoming and talented Gauntlet community, I would be willing to pay/donate to participate in something like this online. Count me in!

  7. I am super into this idea, because a) I can’t afford to get to America and b) I was afraid having two Gauntlet Cons would make them both feel like less of an event, but providing a completely different focus solves that.

  9. I am very excited to see that this project is moving forward! I especially like the focus on helping marginalized designers get play test feedback and networking. I was wondering: Are you considering hi-tests (with designers as players) and regular sessions like Metatopia? Also, I wonder if there is a way to promote play tests with marginalized designers on a more regular basis. That already happens via Gauntlet Hangouts. But it might be helpful if that was an explicit focus.

  11. I think it might be worthwhile to have ambassadors/recruiters that actually went out hunting for game designers from other countries and stuff – especially for a first time con, but just to try and pull in new people to spotlight as well. Love the idea regardless, though!
