G+ Shutting Down – Update #2: MeWe is Probably Garbage

Folks, we are going to just keep our powder dry for now vis-a-vis the G+ situation. MeWe is looking less and less like an attractive option. I’m not sure I can, in good conscience, recommend people start heading over there given it seems to be just stuffed with Nazis and their CEO is a free speech absolutist (translation: you can say whatever racist, Nazi shit you want and we won’t bat an eye). This is particularly the case since The Gauntlet so prizes diversity and inclusivity. Also: some of the people on G+ who are advocating the move to MeWe are people I hold in very low regard. I’m not putting anyone on blast (unless I need to) but suffice to say, MeWe is looking like some milkshake duck-ass shit and I think I’m done with it.

We have many months to get this figured out. And we will.

  1. Mark Plemmons Yeah, that’s a known thing. But, I mean, Nazis are everywhere. The problem with MeWe is it seems to ONLY be Nazis. And the CEO actively courts them.

  3. Sean Milliff Pretty damn close. The James Wood thing was gross. Also: a policy of “You can say whatever you want! Free speech for everyone!” is not a good look (for us at least). People from marginalized communities hear that differently and I don’t intend to be constantly defending MeWe to people I want to join the Gauntlet.

  5. I mean, this is more of a “ya’ll” problem than an “us” problem when it comes to The Gauntlet vs everyone else on G+. I think wherever we land, we’ll be fine. If people want to get involved in what we do, they’ll go wherever we go. If they don’t, that’s fine, too.

  7. Sean Milliff you have stated the situation perfectly. If we could convince a group of RPG folk who hold the same ideals Jason’s espoused to build a simple, secure, private and inclusive RPG social media platform… I’d be all for it.

  9. And I’m not saying that to be callous. But what I am saying is I have personally never had much of a presence outside of our spaces, not even on G+. For me, and for many people in our community, home will be wherever we go. Maybe that will be a smaller group of people, but that’s ok.

  11. I signed up yesterday, guided by the staff of Yochai Gal, and found a lot of connections already.

No Nazis so far. Yochai stood on the bridge of Bridge of Khazad-dûm and said, “You cannot pass!”

I have run into antisemitic comments on Discord, and I’ve made it a habit to throw light on them each time. I will not hide from white supremacists.

  13. Sean Milliff Yeah, but Twitter has the advantage of a huge userbase. I’m not getting in bed with a no-name platform that is presently just filled with Nazis (and a handful of gamers).

  15. Well, I for one am happy that we’re not going with MeWe for UX reasons if nothing else. I joined up and immediately wished I hadn’t. It looks like the bastard lovechild of Facebook and Yahoo. Nothing like as good as the clean UI of Google+.

  17. What’s The Gauntlet’s interest in finding a social media home? As I see it it’s about organizing Hangouts. Everything else can be done by Slack or Twitter/blog comments. Right?

So what replaces organizing Hangouts the best?

Let me know if I’ve missed some useful function that the G+ space provides.

  19. Robert Bohl Well, the main thing is it has been our fully public home on the web. Does most of our conversation happen here? Not by a long shot (the G+ Community conversations are probably a hundredth of what goes on in our Slack). But it’s free and it’s something we can point people to.

  21. Personally, I enjoy a less “real time” time way to communicate like g+ especially that I visit social media sparingly.

I feel that if you are not in the current conversation on slack/etc. it is almost impossible to catch up and grasp the topic. Not to mention adding something constructive.

Other than that, a place like g+ acts also as an archive for what was/is happening in the gauntlet. G+ kinda falls short on that front with its lackluster search function and trying to navigate back to old discussions, but it is helpful as an archive nevertheless.

I think adding another slack for free users is a bad idea. It will splinter the community (especially that slack only lets you view a single “server” at once), which I think that against the idea of inclusivity.

I would love a forum where the community can post and discuss things. Even if I mostly lurk around the gauntlet, it is a place of respite, full of positivity that really means something to me.

There are things beyond the podcasts, zines and online games that gauntlet provides. For me it is first and foremost a community.

Edit: Fixed all the typos I made by typing on the phone.

  23. Thankfully, we’ve got 10 months to find a solution, because so far, things ain’t lookin’ too good – not so much for Gauntlet, but more for TTRPGers. It seemed like it was one of the few groups that really drove G+

  25. Jason Cordova I’d like to throw in a plea for the Gauntlet not to move exclusively to private platforms. This isn’t about discussion and community, those things happen on Slack and in Hangouts and can happen over twitter. You are 100% on target that we will be fine without G+ in that regard. It’s about our calendar being visible and accessible to new players, the people who aren’t “us” yet and could be. The G+ hangouts page is a place where it is really easy for people from outside The Gauntlet to stumble on our games. It is part of a larger ecosystem within the hobby, and so is easy to find, but also doesn’t require the kind of interaction that, say, Twitter does. It’s how I found the community, and I’m grateful for it every day. You’re right that the Gauntlet doesn’t need need this. We’ll be just fine without it. But I think it’s an important way we can make ourselves accessible and visible to outsiders who might want to become insiders.

  27. Jesse Abelman Wouldn’t adding a link to wherever The Gauntlet lands to the Gauntlet’s Website (the one that lists the podcasts and hosts the RSS feeds that link to the podcasts) be able to direct people to whatever the new community home is?

  29. Jonathan Fearn Badillo Once they’re on the website, the link to the calendar is right there anyway. I’m not worried that people won’t be able to get to the new social media home from The Gauntlet, I’m worried that the new social media home will be invisible to people outside the Gauntlet, and they won’t find the gaming calendar.

  31. Fraser Ronald I’m a mod for the TTRPG group and we are investigating what we’re going to do. Sad to see, though, that membership has dropped since the announcement: looks like a lot of people immediately deleted their accounts 🙁

Same as here, though, we don’t want to rush into the wrong new network.
