  1. Yes, I was literally thinking about something along these lines within the past hour. People from “our world” being thrust into a fantasy setting. I was thinking somehow a bus full of X (sports team, rock band, christian revival group, etc) is “touched by the Maelstrom” and sent into the fantasy world.

But I also like your trigger too.

Would players play “themselves”? Or would they make up a character. Was thinking – is it worth it to mechanically limit players from trying to game the system (My character is a medieval history major with a minor in fantasy literature who has a black belt in judo and ancient weapons…)? Or can players min-max as much as they want.

But your set up Maxime Lacoste takes all that considerations away.

How would the emotional issues come up in play? How will you mechanize?

  3. Chris Shorb Oh you play yourself for sure. Sweater, Smartphone, and car keys follow you but are probably useless. Its a whole new game mechanic. Its in super early stage. Pre-alpha at this point. It revolves around my own personal worldview of balance, equilibrium and the wrongness of excess in all things. It will use the reflection methaphor to express this with paired “stats” called “Reflections”. Each being a self contained Ying-yang if you want.

    Mistrust vs Self-Confidence

    Speed vs Vigor

    Mundane vs Mysterious

    Empathy vs Introspection.

Pvp is super possible because the dice mechanics will be used consistently across the game.

    More coming soon! ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Well it wont be for everyone. Taste is personal. I strong warning will be offered upfront. This will be a game about introspection and emotion as well as adventuring in a magical realm.

Sorry for the english mistakes. Im french. Thanks for pointing it ou though. I will need a good editer at some point.

  7. Sounds great. I love games where people find themselves thrust into the extraordinary. However, I lose all interest when its a game where you play yourself. There are a lot of pitfalls to it that I only found after several games with the premise. Your mileage may vary of course. I’m not sure there’s much gaming the system to worry about if you’re going with something along the lines of PbtA and its close friends/relatives.

  9. Thanks John Alexander my bad for being unclear. By “yourself” I ment the fictional “real life” character you create not your actual real self. Bad wording.

  11. I dont want people to have to upon up about their personal life struggles. Thats for professionals and close thrusted friends. I want them to be able to explore and address emotional conflict.

  13. I like the concept. Be sure to warn everyone at the table about the emotional events that will be role played. People who have actually experienced those things IRL might be triggered by it.

  15. Oh for sure Bryen Alperin Its mandatory for this game.

The X-Card and a tone discussion using the CATS method will be offered at the start of every game. If I ever make this into an actual book, thats gonna be CHAPTER 1. ๐Ÿ™‚

  17. Might want to look at the Thresholds and Archetypes in Geist: The Sin-Eaters. You play as a ghost, and thereโ€™s a faction/class system based on how you died and how you deal with it. Perhaps you could do something similar based on type of emotional event.
