Today we launched our Dungeon World Basics series on the Discern Realities podcast. If you know anyone who is DW-curious (or if you yourself are), this should be a really great resource. It includes roughly 20 minutes of topic discussion and 20 minutes of (very good) actual play.

Check it out and let us know what you think!

  1. Oh shit. That’s exciting. I am about three episodes behind, believe it or not. I’ve been so into reading lately that podcasts took a back seat. But I’m getting on it NOW.

  3. Get out of my EARS Spotify! I’ve got a Discern Realities to listen to!

I’m so excited about this series! Now I can direct my D&D or RPG curious friends to this!

  5. Hahaha! This is great! I’m loving the music! Excellent points about economic and creative accessibility. That ease of tinkering makes it irresistible to me.

  7. That was a great listen – look forward to future episodes. Still haven’t played DW or any PBtA game, but hear so much about them from the Gauntlet, I feel like I’m in a weird space of getting it/not getting it. The GM moves episode should be especially enlightening.

  9. “Financially more accessible.” No. Fucking. Kidding. I ran three sessions of 5e recently. More than $100 of books for about 12 hours of fun. I’ve run countless hours of DW for probably less than .25 an hour. 🙂

  11. Great show David LaFreniere and Jason Cordova.

This show was about why you might want to play DW, for your future shows I am guessing it is going to be about how you play DW.

My suggestion (for what it’s worth) would be breaking the book up into sequential chunks and digging into those sections to help new players grok them. I would suggest the actual play bit being more focused on the bits under discussion. If people want to hear DW being played, there are already podcasts out for that (Such as Fear of a Black Dragon). If the show was about Discern Realities, give me a half dozen examples, show me when it is triggered and when it isn’t, how to handle the questions posed by the players.

  13. Tangentially Related: Has there been a Discern Realities where they talked about the Ranger’s Animal Companion? I think they have been looking through the past episodes I couldn’t find it. Had one in our last game and we weren’t really sure how to work it in mechanically. Storywise, it was fine.

  15. Great episode, I’m really looking forward to this series! On a slight tangent, in DR 57 you recommended the Alford Soultaker AP. I downloaded the episodes and listened to them all in a series on a long flight and they were REALLY good!

  17. Love this episode! It’ll be fantastic to be able to point people to it when they ask about DW.

Just bring back the theme song, I beg you 🙂

  19. I’m really looking forward to this, because I feel like (although I’ve run DW) I don’t quite grok how it’s intended to be played. I can use all the help I can get.

  21. Listened to the episode today and I was a little confused about the AP. It was good and entertaining, which is always a plus, but as part of a “basics” episode I thought it would be less “real AP” and more “orchestrated to illustrate moves, with some dissection of the moves, as an exploration of the topic being explained in the episode.” I enjoyed it a lot on its own merit, but it wasn’t what I was expecting in context.

Also, as an explanation of the way dice are used in DW vs DnD, I like to explain what they’re modeling, since this is something new players from the trad side have trouble grokking so much. DnD dice act like a video game physics engine: throwing things further is harder, so -1 to your roll. Oh, that’s an easy lock, +2 to your roll. They’re trying to model what physically happens. So the result is a task succeeds, or doesn’t.

DW dice are like the engine behind a book: if narrative and genre defined the rule of physics. So we aren’t interested in easy or hard, likely or unlikely. We roll dice to determine one out of three roads forward: got it easy, got it hard, got fucked. Something being “harder” as a physical task plays absolutely no role here, right? I’m not modeling physical odds of success, I’m modeling narrative odds of a twist. Different physics engine. Sort of like Exalted, where you get dice bonuses for doing cool stunts and not penalties, because Cool is part of the physics engine.

  23. J Stein I mean, as for the discussion portion, we’re really trying to avoid theory here. Dragging out GNS or other Forge talk is probably interesting to someone, but I’m not sure it serves our purpose. In any case, we’re not done with the series. Episode 2 is Basic Moves and Episode 3 is about managing combat.

As for the AP, I have always strongly resisted the “play-by-play” model (a few people wanted Pocket-Sized Play to be that, too). I teach dozens of people how to play PbtA games every year on Gauntlet Hangouts by simply playing with them. I think there is no better way to learn something than to watch it being done well.

  25. Every system needs a series like this, I’m glad you are creating one for Dungeon World. It sounds like you are going to do a great job with it. Dungeon World has become one of my favorite FRPGs.
