I realised the other day that the Gauntlet community is really supportive, but there’s someone we tend to leave out: Ourselves. We support each other, we say how great our playmates were, we complement each other’s designs, but we often are so…quiet about our own achievements. Your game design is brilliant and evocative, mine is just a dumb little hack. You are an awesome player that weaves amazing stories, I’m just fumbling through. That kind of thing.

So I’m making a space for that. Right here and right now. I’m making a space for us to be proud of the work we’ve done and not be ashamed. I’m making a space, right here, for you to tell this community the GREAT stuff you’ve done, and the AWESOME stuff you want to do. I’m letting you set a goal, and revel in its achievement. Next week we’ll do this again, and we’ll have new achievements, and new goals.

Format is Wishes and Stars. A Star is something that you liked, a Wish is something that you want to see. It elegantly lets us both look back and look forward at the games we play (or games we will play, or will design, or something totally different!).

I’m so excited to hear about all the things you’ve done and will do.

  1. Star: I ran about 10 total hours of playtesting for Dogs PbtA in one day! It was huuuuge, and took just all the spoons I had. But I did it, and I was really proud of not just running my first playtest, but that people enjoyed it! It was a huge achievement, one of which I’m super proud.

Wish: This week I’m going to be finishing our game of Good Society (Jane Austen RPG). I’m so very unfamiliar with the subject matter, and I’m worried that I’m playing it wrong all the time. But I’m going to give it my best, and hopefully provide some cool resolution to some stories!

  3. Star: I just ran 4 sessions of Urban Shadows, 2 of which were during a stressful time in my life. This last session I ran was great, and I was concerned that it wouldn’t be.

Wish: As explained in Slack and on my Twitter, I want to offer Dream Askew and/or Dream Apart in June, and I want the game(s) to be respectful of the subject matter.

  5. Star: I’ve busted my hump to get a bunch of things published in various languages in the past two weeks. The translators have been great to work with. With much of that work out of the way, I’m psyched to run my crazy brain droppings with the Gauntlet. Best group of players that I’ve been a part of. Just, great, great players who are willing to experiment.

Wish: I totally dropped the ball on “looking at the characters through crosshairs” on a recent session. The pacing became kinda plodding. It wasn’t as cool as it could have been. There were some system mastery issues… I wish for the strength to take control of the pacing and rules material in the next session that I MC.

  7. Star: So this will have quite a bit of lead up to it so I’m sorry. I have just taken a new job back in November that completely changed my schedule around making my free time almost completely at odds with most peoples, and that got frustrating. This lead me to running a lot of games for the gauntlet specifically at the times that work for me. I felt that without doing so I’d never get to play the games I wanted to play (still miss being a player though). This lead me to do 2 very intensive games, Unknown Armies last month immediately followed by a LONG run of Night Witches.

Unknown Armies went well, but it was rougher than I thought in this format, so I came into Night Witches feeling a bit drained. On top of that, I was planning trips for two very full months in April and May as well as doing a special volunteer project. Pretty much I go into every Sunday (the day I run) feeling a bit overwhelmed.

But my star is that I’m continuing to bring it for this game, and it’s fucking paying off. Seriously, my last session really drove the game home. So yeah, I’m pretty fucking proud of the results here.

Wish: On top of everything else going on, I’m trying to write more for Codex. Pretty soon you all will (hopefully) be reading my first published game. The feedback I’ve been getting has been intensely positive, but I hope you all enjoy the game and decide to play it. If you do decide to play “…And Then They Met” feel free to let me know how it went.

  9. Star: I’m real excited about Final Girl: A Game of Love, my spin on Final Girl with the Bachelor — where I’m like, constantly and pleasantly surprised when people think it sounds like a cool idea? I think I now feel comfortable owning the possibility that it may be a cool idea for real. I’m digging it.

Wish: For next week? I wish that future Lauren doesn’t let work deadlines get in the way of making progress on other game things ticking along in the background; and can set small, achievable goals to make sure progress is done. We’ll see how that goes with the Easter break and a flight to NZ but ahhh~ I trust future Lauren I think.

  11. Star: I’ve completed a micro PbtA hack since moving to my new place in Fulham a week ago, then yesterday I began and finished a micro game about the life of an alchemist/sorcerer using a word play mechanic.

Wish: To get the above games playtested and generally get more gaming in my life after a long dry spell.

  13. Star : Stopped modifying systems and created my own, sought out a bunch of feedback and adjusted it accordingly. Very happy with the result.

Wish : Get some free time to start running it for the various slack groups and discords that i’m a part of.

  15. Star: I’ve become much better at actually acting as a character, instead of my normal self. Oh! And I successfully adapted my own large sci-if setting into Traveller, such that the game is very playable.

Wish: I’d like to do a modern-set RPG that has an adventure vibe, moreso than a relationships one.

    🙂

  17. Star: Writing a micro-game about a fictionalised version of Harriette Wilson’s memior which i am excited about.

Wish: Play and run more games that go longer than two or three sessions. Honestly I’ve only ever played one game that reached six sessions, and not much more than that of five.

  19. Star: After running 10+ sessions of Bluebeard’s Bride I am pretty confident that I can make my players feel deeply unsettled. I can make them Shiver With Fear.

Wish: I want to branch out and run some exploration-heavy OSR-ish games, and maybe even something leaning in the gonzo direction.

  21. Star: Finally joined the Gauntlet Slack and started looking at the online games for something I can fit into my schedule, eventually. It probably doesn’t sound like much, but both are big steps for me – I’ve played very few games outside my group of local friends (mostly known from high school and college), and I am very shy about expanding beyond that.

Wish: Now I have to get a game or two on my schedule (and a mic so I can actually participate, and a space in my apartment where I can sit and play without bothering a sleeping baby).

  23. Star: I had my first character death in DW last week and it was amazing! I was playing a flouncy courtier that had no options left in life but to join a pirate crew. He grew progressively darker and more power hungry until he had a duel with the captain to the death. So much fun to play a character out of my wheelhouse!

Hope: I’m running first game of DW next week and am hoping I can facilitate half the fun I have had playing games with the Gauntlet.

  25. River Williamson That was it “Stars and Wishes”! (I was trying to remember that alternative to Roses and Thorns that you had talked about before, Sidney Icarus). For me:

Stars: Wow, recently I’m feeling like I’m a really good RPG-er. I feel like I’m really learning to embody the “be obvious”, “listen”, “be kind”, “ask questions” type of recommendations. I’ve played in some really amazing games all over the indie spectrum in the last months here at the Gauntlet and elsewhere, and I’m just getting into a groove with all these games, both facilitating and participating. (And there is always more to learn, but I feel like I see those gaps as well…)

Wishes: Honestly, as much as I praise myself above, the reason I love this community is because I feel like there are so many amazing players here (who know how to share the tables, and are kind, and creative, and funny in a sharing way), and I just want to play with more of them, and I wish I could make even more time to get in games.

Thanks Sid! Writing this is awkward, but I think it’s really good for us to praise ourselves! You’re a STAR.

  27. Stars: I did a few things last year I’m proud of. I wrote a PbtA version of Ryuutama that I think is pretty good. I covered most of the rules of Blades in the Dark in my tutorial series, (which despite its flaws did help people learn the game) and I ran a pretty good campaign of The Burning Wheel.

Wishes: To come up with an idea worth a damn for submitting something to Codex or hacking Blades in the Dark.

  29. Stars: I’ve been running an Ars Magica campaign for 25 years now, and it’s still alive and kicking.

Wishes: I would really like to run some games on the gauntlet. I’ve just been too lazy and too shy und too busy procrastinating to ask for the opportunity to post on the calender, but I will. fingers crossed

  31. Star: After several years of idly thinking I should try playing or running something online, I tried a game with the Gauntlet and it was awesome and hardly scary at all.

Wish: In the same vein, I’d like to try running/facilitating something.
