THE MARCH TO GAMERDOM

Just a heads up as we head into February and GMs begin to post games for April– we still have room for games in March. If you’re thinking about running a game for The Gauntlet check out the monthly calendar. You can see there which nights & days have fewer games.

If you’re thinking about running a Gauntlet game, I’d be glad to help you out. I can direct you to our online resources & videos, and I’d be glad to chat with you one-on-one if you’d like.

  1. Is there a place for new gamers to have a chance to learn and play online games?

I ask because I’m pretty newish to playing rpgs, especially online, and I was directed to come to The Gauntlet from the Misdirected Mark Podcast guys because I am neurodiverse (autistic) and trans and they said The Gauntlet is a very welcoming community.

  3. You’re in the right place! I’d only ever played one RPG before coming to the Gauntlet and have now played three different games over the last few months and loved the help and support I got to understand the how to play each of the games. My advice would be to just pick a game with a description that sounds interesting and message the GM if you need anything clarified ahead of time.

  5. Stacie Winters Is there something you’re particularly interested in trying out? We could put together a one-shot for you in Feb, grab a couple of Gauntlet folks to fill the table and you could see what you think. It’d be a good way for you to test the waters.

  7. Lowell Francis … That’s really nice of you. I am not entirely sure which game, there are so many options. I can give a short rundown of games I’ve felt inspired by when reading the books.

Conceptually I have liked many of the following:

    – PbtA games

    – Fate system games

    – Genesys/Edge of the Empire

    – Conan 2d20 from Modiphius

    – Starfinder and Stars Without Number

    – Blades in the Dark

    – Radiance (a relatively unknown but really neat fantasy d20 variant… the phb of it is free on drivethrurpg too).

Those games or game systems mentioned seem to be ones I have gravitated to over the years for one reason or another and represent examples of ideas I’ve imagined trying to play but never have. If I wrote a full list of all games… It’d be a long list.

But I admit to being confused right now on how to use the online tools to role play online. So I am very new to this. Is it Skype or Google Hangouts? Would we use Roll20 for rolling dice? Things like that.

  9. Let me pull together some notes on that for you. We’ve done a couple of Q&A videos and assembled some GM advice, but let me see what’s a good overview. The short version though is– we use Google Hangouts for sessions. The GM usually sends the invite link for that out at the time of the event.

For rolling we have a couple of options, but we’ve recently been using a shared online die roller called Roll for Your Party. One of the Gauntlet folks put it together.

rollforyour.party – Roll For Your Party

    Here’s a guide I wrote for that: https://www.dropbox.com/s/jiftyf13l0y0q5w/RFYP%20v1_0.pdf?dl=0

We can put together an intro Hangout for you, if you’d like someone to walk you through the steps.

  11. 1-If I want to book a time, the google calender tells me in my time zone and converts it for others logged in elsewhere?

2-If players need access to files, is there a way to give them a URL or the files before game start?

  13. 1- when you say book a time, what exactly are you speaking of– a Google event or the Gauntlet Calendar?

2- Absolutely. I typically reach out to players a week ahead of time. That serves to remind them of the game and let’s me point them to any resources I’ve put up online. Most GMs use Google Drive to do this. They create a folder there and add any cheat sheets, playbooks, and/or character keeper they might have. It’s easy to create a sharing link for the folder– you can then copy & paste it into an email.

  15. Ah, that is easily the most asked question we get. The times shown on the calendar are based on the timezone you’ve set with Google. Assuming you have it set to your time-zone, it is should you the correct time for you. We’ve had a cases where someone had a had mis-set their TZ on their phone which gave them a different time between that and their PC. But it does translate the time for you.
